2019 Victoria Derby Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips

Track: Flemington
Distance: 2500m
Stake: AU$1.5 million

The Victoria (VRC) Derby is the feature race on Day 1 of the Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington. A race for three-year-old stayers, the Victoria Derby has a long history of champion winners and although the 2019 field looks a touch low on quality, it should be an intriguing race.

2018 Victoria Derby result

Punters who listened to our best each way tips would have loved the result. Extra Brut ended up paying 15.00 to win for Darren Weir and it was the master trainers' first Derby runner of his career.

Here's what we said about the 2018 Victoria Derby winner.

"It's fair to say the Darren Weir-trained runner was disappointing in behind Thinkin' Big last start after showing so much staying promise earlier in the season. The son of Domesday finished sixth in the Neil Robinson when running as the 2.90 favourite.

Punters are best to forgive him for that effort and hope the increase in distance suits him better. He was a commanding winner over 1800m prior to that at Flemington and the longer straight could be his calling. This will give him more time to run down Thinkin' Big in front and 10.00 is worth snapping up as he'll run shorter on race day.

We're not doubting his ability and also the ability of Darren Weir to get his horses cherry ripe for the Victoria Derby."
