Before the best staying fillies go to battle in the VRC Oaks next Thursday, many of them will be lining up in Saturday's Group 2 Wakeful Stakes at Flemington.

Aristia was well-backed at each way odds and the money was well spent. She fought off a strong challenge from three runners down the Flemington straight to give Damian Lane a significant win.

Aristia will head to the Oaks but the future of Verry Elleegant is up in the air after it failed to make any impression in the Wakeful Stakes. The odds-on favourite got too far back during the run and ran greenly throughout.
