We take a look through the betting for the feature race at Newmarket on Saturday and provide readers with our 2020 July Cup odds and tips on Saturday 11th July.

The third and final afternoon at Newmarket’s July Festival is headlined by the July Cup. This thrilling six-furlong sprint was first staged at Newmarket way back in 1876 and many of the sports finest sprinters have claimed victory on the July Course.

The July Cup is one of the most looked forward to races on the flat racing calendar, as it often brings together the winners of races like the King’s Stand Stakes, Diamond Jubilee Stakes and Commonwealth Cup, along with horses who didn’t see out the trip in either the 1000 or 2000 Guineas.

This year’s race is looking as stacked with quality as ever, so lets take a look through the market and find our best bets!

Golden Horde was one of my best bets of the week in the Commonwealth Cup. I was, therefore, delighted to see Clive Cox’s sprinter hold on from the front to claim the big three-year-old prize of the week. Adam Kirby took his mount straight to the head of affairs, and no-one could lay a glove on Golden Horde, who kept on finding out in front before sealing victory by a length-and-a-half.

That win was just desserts for Golden Horde, who had gone down narrowly in two Group Ones at the end of his two-year-old campaign. Clive Cox’s star is the joint-highest rated entrant in the 2020 July Cup, and will carry six-pounds less on his back than his older rivals.

Leading the charge for the older brigade is Hello Youmzain, who replicated Golden Horde’s performance in winning the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. Kevin Stott’s mount hit the gates smartly and made all of the running, surviving a late surge from Dream Of Dreams to land his second career Group One.

Having bolted up in a Group Three at home in Ireland, Sceptical was the well-backed favourite for the Diamond Jubilee. Denis Hogan’s surprise package moved smoothly into contention, but just couldn’t find a final gear in the last two furlongs, and dropped back to third on the run to the line. Sceptical is clearly a horse with plenty of natural pace, and I think five-furlongs suits him much more than six.

Khaadem put up his best effort in Group One company that day, staying on for fourth after looking very keen on the inside rail. The jury remains out on whether this speedy horse can cut it at the highest level, but he’s certainly got the raw ability to contend if he can put everything together.

Aidan O’Brien has won the last two July Cup with three-year-olds. His only entrant in this year's contest is Southern Hills, who's run just once since winning the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2019. Southern Hills ran OK in the Commonwealth Cup, finishing seventh after sitting just behind the pace for much of the race. He's sure to improve, but I doubt whether he'll have come on enough to leap ahead of Golden Horde.

The Tin Man and Brando look a little past their best. Oxted has never run above Group Three level. Equilateral has been well beaten on his last four attempts at six-furlongs, while the likes of Shine So Bright and Sir Dancealot will have to pick their form up markedly to get involved.

Although the split between winners aged three or four-years-old and above has been fairly equal in the last ten years, the last three winners of the July Cup were all three. The six-pound weight-for-age allowance gives three-year-olds a massive advantage, especially if they’ve gained plenty of experience at Group One level.

So, despite Hello Youmzain holding appeal, I’m going to side with two three-year-olds, the first being GOLDEN HORDE. Clive Cox is very good at helping young sprinters improve, and has won the July Cup twice in the last seven years. Adam Kirby’s mount has proven himself very tactically versatile and his will to win cannot be questioned either. 3/1 looks an excellent price.

The one who really captures my imagination at a much longer price, however, is Richard Hannon’s THREAT.

Although Richard Hannon claimed at the start of the season that Threat would be suited by a mile, I wasn’t convinced. When he won the Champagne Stakes over seven furlongs last year, Pat Dobbs’ mount was typing up noticeably in the strides before the line.

In the St James’s Palace Stakes, Threat travelled into the race powerfully and was going every bit as well as Wichita at the head of affairs. Entering the final two furlongs, it was soon clear that Oisin Murphy’s mount wasn’t going to find anything extra, and crossed the line very one-paced back in fifth.

A fast start will be vital in what’s sure to be a swiftly run race, so Threat cannot afford the sort of start he produced behind Earthlight and Golden Horde in the Middle Park Stakes last autumn. If he can get off a flyer and settle behind the pace, then I fancy Threat will be able to show Richard Hannon that he is a natural sprinter after-all.

Verdict

I’m placing my faith in the three-year-olds this year, and current favourite Golden Horde holds plenty of appeal at 3/1 (Now 11/4)

My big fancy is Threat, who could pull up a few trees now back over this more comfortable trip. I just hope he features in the final field. (Tipped at 16/1, now 10/1.)
