We take a look through the 2020 Old Roan Chase odds and provide readers with our Old Roan Chase tips.

Aintree opens it gates for the first time this season on Sunday, and a strong field will assemble for their feature race on the card, the Old Roan Chase. Great names like Monet's Garden, Alberta Run and Kauto Star have won this race in the last few decades, and Itchy Feet will be looking to follow in their footsteps.

Itchy Feet handed Olly Murphy his first Grade One win as a trainer at Sandown last year, as he surged to victory in the Scilly Isles Novices' Chase. Gavin Sheehan's mount didn't jump with any fluency in the Marsh Chase at Cheltenham, and ended up unseating his rider at just the sixth fence.

Only Monet's Garden and Kauto Star have carried more than 11-8 to victory in this limited handicap, but that won't put Murphy off, and he'll be confident that Itchy Feet can secure victory on his reappearance.

Magic Saint will also be lumbered with top-weight, despite the fact he's only ever won at Class Two level over fences. Paul Nicholls' six-year-old clearly has bundles of ability, but the handicapped hasn't been kind to him.

Midnight Shadow won here at Aintree in December 2018, and took advantage of Champ's tumble to win the Dipper last season. Sue Smith's chaser was powerless to prevent Itchy Feet winning the Scilly Isles, but performed much better than his rival at the Cheltenham festival, where he was only beaten ten lengths back in sixth.

Tom George's Clondaw Castle is a horse I'm keen to follow in handicaps this season. I'm not sure he's truly up to Grade Two standard, but a decent showing here could set him up perfectly for the BetVictor Gold Cup, held at Cheltenham in November.

Oldgrangewood secured two narrow victories over classy opposition in big handicaps last season, and ran well again to place fourth in the Brown Advisory Plate. Dan Skelton's charge finished a ten-length third behind Smad Place in this race in 2017, and returns to Aintree on the back of his best campaign over fences.

Vision Des Flos has everything needed to be a high-quality chaser, but has failed to really deliver on that promise over the past two years. Anne Mac was vastly outclassed in the Marsh at Cheltenham, and I can't see her being up to standard here either.

Nuts Well, who's won four of his last five starts over fences at Class Two and Three level, will be lumbered with top-weight on Sunday, for reasons quite unknown to everyone. Imperial Presence also brings winning form with him to Aintree, but I can't see him, or any of the market backmarkers making a significant impact.

12 of the 16 winners of the Old Roan have carried a price of 8/1 or lower to post, so it's not a race which often produces upsets. Itchy Feet is the clear class angle in the race, but he has to give weight to dangerous rivals in Oldgrangewood and MIDNIGHT SHADOW, and it's the latter who gets my vote.

Sue Smith's stable star was comfortably beaten by Itchy Feet when they met at Sandown. However, Olly Murphy's charge is much better suited to sharp, right-handed tracks, and Midnight Shadow simply couldn't match his rival for finishing pace on the short run to the line after the last.

Midnight Shadow's wins have come around either Cheltenham, Aintree, Ayr and Uttoxeter - all of which are left-handed tracks which suit galloping sorts over speedsters. Ground on the better side of soft will suit Midnight Shadow perfectly, and he's gone very well fresh in the past.

Verdict

Midnight Shadow is a Grade Two winner over fences, and is well-suited by galloping, left-handed tracks like Aintree. He gains a significant amount of weight from the two at the top of the betting. At 8/1, he's an excellent each-way bet.
