The eyes of the world were fixed squarely on Longchamp this afternoon, as 20 of flat racing's finest took part in the 2022 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Last year's shock winner, Torquator Tasso returned to defend his crown. Frankie Dettori's mount entered the stalls as the third-favourite, behind Aidan O'Brien's Luxembourg and Sir Mark Prescott's mare Alpinista, who jumped to the head of the betting just before the off.

Classic winner Vadeni and Westover also sat prominently in the betting. As did Titleholder, one of four runners for Japan. Home runners Onesto and Al Hakeem were not without support. Mishriff, Mendocino and Alenquer also featured in a star-studded renewal.

The rain hammered down onto the stalls at Longchamp, as the field got off to a level break. Titleholder was pushed straight to the front alongside Mendocino. Broome also went forward from a wide stall, before slotting in as the field entered the first bend.

Despite the treacherous ground conditions, the pace was fairly hot. Luxembourg, Alpinista and Al Hakeem settled nicely in the middle of the pack. Torquator Tasso sat wide in the final third of the field, as Mishriff and Bubble Gift were held up out the back.

Turning for home, the ground began to take its toll. As plenty of top-quality rivals cried enough, Luke Morris sat motionless aboard Alpinista, as the well-backed favourite sauntered past the front-runners.

Morris kicked for home and Alpinista responded, opening up a three lengths lead. Vadeni and Torquator Tasso sprung from the pack and began to close on the leader, but the line arrived just in time and Alpinista was crowned the Queen of Longchamp.

Sir Mark Prescott was overcome with emotion following his first triumph in the Arc. As was the winning jockey Luke Morris, who richly deserves this success for the class and perseverance he's displayed throughout his career.

Christophe Soumillon managed to get Vadeni home, who ran a stormer to finish second. Torquator Tasso backed up last year's win with an excellent third-place finish. Al Hakeem and Grand Glory rounded off the top five.
