This famous Group One was first staged at Paris-Longchamp racecourse back in 1920. Many of Europe's finest have landed this most prestigious prize during its storied history, including legendary names like Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Sea The Stars, Treve and Enable.

2024 Prix de 'Arc de Triomphe Ante-Post Tip - Los Angeles

After the Ebor Festival at York, I put LOS ANGELES (6/1) up at 16/1 for the Arc. Aidan O'Brien's star had just carried a penalty to victory in the Great Voltiguer Stakes, having previously bounced back from the first defeat of his career at Epsom by winning the Irish Derby.

In the immediate aftermath of that victory at York, Aidan O'Brien mentioned the Irish Champion Stakes at Los Angeles' next target - claiming a fourth-place finish or better in that ten-furlong Group One would set his star up perfectly for a trip to Longchamp. As expected, Dylan Browne McMonagle's mount found the early pace and the track a Leopardstown a little sharp for his liking, staying on late in the day to finish less than two lengths adrift of Economics and Auguste Rodin in fourth.

O'Brien took his star to France for the ten-furlong Criterium de St Cloud as a juvenile, knowing that soft French ground and a strong test of stamina would see Los Angeles to best effect. An end-to-end gallop in a race like the Arc should suit O'Brien's colt perfectly and the presence of Ryan Moore in the saddle only boosts Los Angeles' already strong claims.

2024 Prix de 'Arc de Triomphe Tip 2 - Fantastic Moon

While his eleventh-place finish in last year's renewal and his position in the market may not signal an imminent change in fortunes for FANTASTIC MOON (25/1), I do think there are several reasons why Sarah Steinberg's raider is overpriced.

Last year's Arc couldn't have gone any worse for Fantastic Moon, who was sent off at 12/1 following his victory in a messy Prix Niel. From a wide draw in stall 12, Rene Piechulek was rebuffed as he attempted to find a nice position in the pack. Fantastic Moon was keen and got lit up a couple of times around the sweeping bend. Straightening for home, Piechulek asked his mount for an effort and Fantastic Moon did make some initial inroads. Yet, as first Ace Impact and then Onesto swept around his outside to challenge, Piechulek knew his race was run and allowed his mount to scamper across the line seven lengths adrift of the winner.

This summer, Fantastic Moon beat a strong rival in Lordano to win a Group Two at Cologne and returns to Longchamp on the back of a career-best victory in the Grossier Pries von Baden. Piechulek settled his mount down nicely at the rear, angled wide to take the stand's rail turning for home and comfortably saw off a three-time Group One winner in Dubai Honour to land his second major prize on home soil.

As connections said in their pre-Arc quotes, decent ground is vital to Fantastic Moon, who stays well and isn't short of finishing speed. The forecast suggests that the current going description of good-to-soft could well hold, which would be ideal for most of this year's runners. From a much kinder draw down in stall two, Piechulek will have no trouble finding both cover and a nice position on the rail. In a wide-open renewal of the Arc, Fantastic Moon has a chance of hitting the frame.

Verdict

Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe 2024

I backed Los Angeles at 16/1 earlier in the summer and I'm not going to desert Ryan Moore's mount now that he's challenging for favouritism.

I could see Fantastic Moon running well at a much longer price too. I expect prices longer than 25/1 will be available on the day of the day, so I won't be backing him until Sunday. If rain does arrive and the ground softens beyond good-to-soft, then I won't be backing him at all.
