Doncaster course history
Meetings at Doncaster go all the way back to the 16th century. It’s one of the oldest and largest racing centres in the UK.
Otherwise known as “Town Moor”, Doncaster is home to two of the world’s oldest races. The Doncaster Cup was first run in 1766 and it’s the oldest continually-run race in the world.
It’s part of the Stayers’ Triple Crown, which also includes the Goodwood Cup and Ascot Gold Cup.
The other race is the St. Leger Stakes. It was first run in 1776 and only five runners lined up, but it has gained in popularity since.
Due to the popularity of the St. Leger, races all around the world have adopted the St. Leger title. It was originally named by Colonel Anthony St. Leger, who founded the original race.
