Paul Nicholls is, by far, the most dominant trainer in this handicap. The former champion trainer has won ten of the last 21 runnings of the Badger Beers, including all of the last three renewals of the bounce. That could easily have been four-in-a-row too, had Southfield Theatre not fallen at the last when opening up a winning lead.
Present Man won this race under Bryony Frost in both 2017 and '18. Their quest for a hat-trick was ruined by soft ground 12 months ago, but Present Man returned to action with a bang at Chepstow last month, getting up late to win a very competitive race by a nose.
Despite that win, Bryony Frost's mount still returns to Wincanton just two-pounds higher than when he last won this race two years ago. The weather forecast is dry, so the former champion will get the good ground he relishes, and has to be given a leading chance.
That being said, Present Man has to give a pound to a very dangerous rival in the form of stablemate, DANNY WHIZZBANG. Having looked through the field and failed to find an each-way alternative, I'm going to hang my hat on the market leader.
Danny Whizzbang was thrown straight into Grade Two company on his chasing debut at Newbury. Paul Nicholls' star was the least fancied of the trio, but comprehensively outjumped both Reserve Tank and Ardlethen, sealing a comfortable four-length win.
Nicholls' charge wasn't unfancied for the Kauto Star at Kempton, and was still traveling fairly well before being hampered by the falling Master Tommytucker. Danny Whizzbang failed to recover that day, finishing a well-beaten third, a result he repeated behind the hugely impressive Copperhead in the Reynoldstown on his final start of the season.
This lightly-raced seven-year-old has won over this trip in a maiden hurdle. Although he's never run at Wincanton before, Danny Whizzbang boasts winning form around similar tracks in Hereford and Exeter, and jumped well around Kempton for the most part.
The worst performances of his short career have come on genuinely soft ground, so he, like Present Man, will relish the underfoot conditions on Saturday. Everyone will be cheering Bryony Frost home, but I think Danny Whizzbang is a graded performer running against handicapper, and he should be able to make his class count.
