The Betfair Hurdle is one of the richest handicap hurdles staged in Britain during the regular season, so it was brilliant to see Newbury reschedule the race for this Sunday, after the original card last Saturday was washed away.

Several winners of this handicap have gone on to star at major meetings during the sprint, with greats like Persian War and Make A Stand going on to win the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

We've taken a look through the latest Betfair Hurdle odds and listed some key trends, before coming up with two horses to back.

2021 Betfair Hurdle Tips

When I published this preview on the Tuesday before the original date last week, SOARING GLORY sat on a double-figure price. Jonjo O'Neill's novice was heavily backed last week, and opened at a much shorter price when the new entries for the reschedule race were revealed, but I'm going to stick with him as he ticks plenty of boxes.

Having enjoyed a strong bumper campaign last season, Soaring Glory kicked off life over hurdles with a half-length victory over future Grade One winner Bravemansgame. O'Neill's charge then went down fighting to the talented Dusart here in another novice hurdle, losing out by two lengths when giving the winner six pounds.

Despite a fall at Wetherby, Soaring Glory was thrown into the Kennel Gate at Ascot before Christmas. Jonjo O'Neill Jnr still seemed confident approaching the last, but failed to pick up My Drogo and Llandinabo Lad on the run to the line.

An opening handicap mark of 133 looks extremely workable, and Soaring Glory jumped really well here at Newbury in November. He'll enter this year's Betfair Hurdle with mightly strong claims.

Like my first selection, BUZZ was a 12/1 shot when this preview was initially published. He now sits third in the betting, but I still think there's value to be found backing Nicky Henderson's grey each-way at 10/1.

Buzz started off this season in the Welsh Champion Hurdle, and looked to be coming with a winning challenge behind Sceau Royal and Ballyandy, only to clatter through the final flight and find he had nothing left to give after that.

Nico De Boinville's mount then looks a graded performer running against handicappers when bolting up at Ascot, a performance he followed with a runner-up effort in the Betfair Exchange Trophy. Buzz gave Not So Sleepy six-pounds that day and was some nine lengths adrift turning in, but finished strongly to cross the line less than two lengths behind the winner.

Three classy performances have helped Buzz rise to a career-high mark of 152. I wouldn't really fancy him with 11-12 on his back, but top conditional Kevin Brogan takes five off, and that should ensure Buzz is really competitive at Newbury.

Verdict

Soaring Glory has held his own against some of the best novices in England this season, and he should be a big player with just 10-7 to shoulder.

Buzz may sit at the opposite end of the weights, but he's shown plenty of class this term and Kevin Brogan's claimer means he can mount a challenge.
