Saturday's card at Newmarket may feature two prestigious Group Ones, but the main event on the card is undoubtedly the namesake race of the meeting, the Cambridgeshire Handicap. This nine-furlong handicap was first held on the Rowley Mile way back in 1839, and a field of 35 talented handicappers will contest Saturday's renewal.

We've taken a look through the odds and listed some key trends for the Cambridgeshire, before picking out our best ITV Racing tips.

2023 Cambridgeshire Handicap Trends

  • 15 of the last 17 winners were three, four or five year's old
  • 15 of the last 17 winners ran within the last six weeks
  • 13 of the last 17 winners were rated between 94 and 104
  • 13 of the last 17 winners had won that season
  • 12 of the last 17 winners carried between 8-07 and 9-02
  • 12 of the last 17 winners ran in a Class Two Handicap last time out
  • 12 of the last 17 winners returned an SP of 11/1 or longer
  • 12 of the last 17 winners were drawn in stall 15 or wider
  • 11 of the last 17 winners finished fourth or better last time out
  • 10 of the last 17 winners had previously won over 1m2f

As the draw trend suggests, a high draw is massively beneficial in the Cambridgeshire. Along with 12 of the last 17 winners, 68% of the top four placers in that time have come from stall 15 or wider, a percentage that rises up to 85% when you look at the five most recent editions.

Oviedo is a horse I fancied for this ante-post, but Ed Bethell's star was handed the worst draw possible down in stall one, which has to be a massive blow to his chances. Only two of the top 18 in the current betting have been handed single-figure draws and further money is expected to come for both Dual Identity and Greek Order, after they were placed in stalls 16 and 25 respectively.

2023 Cambridgeshire Handicap Tip 1 - Terwada

Another who has been supported this week is TERWADA (20/1) for Simon & Ed Crisford. An impressive maiden winner at Nottingham in June, Terwada saw off a future Class 2 winner, The Gatekeeper to make a winning handicap debut here at Newmarket in July, running up to an impressive RPR of 102.

Tom Marquand then rode Terwada to finish seventh in the Clipper Handicap during the Ebor Festival. Marquand held his keen-going mount up in the early stages and the two were forced wide to try and mount a challenge. In the end, Terwada gave himself too much to do, but still managed to hit the line hard just four lengths adrift of Ropey Guest.

Crisford's three-year-old is one of the least-exposed runners in the field, having only run twice in handicap company so far. Terwada remains on what looks to be a highly workable mark of 95 and could improve again for this slight step up in trip.

2023 Cambridgeshire Handicap Tip 2 - Eilean Dubh

EILEAN DUBH (50/1) finished a place behind Terwada in the Clipper Handicap at York. Karl Burke's five-year-old got a little outpaced when the pace picked up, but regathered his stride in the closing stages to finish just outside the places.

An impressive winner of a Class 2 handicap on John Smith's Cup day at York last season, Eilean Dubh powered home to score off a mark of 92 at Hamilton in June. Burke's five-year-old then placed third behind Blue For You in the same handicap he'd won the previous year at York, before that highly-creditable eighth at the Ebor Festival.

Burke has called up little-known Irish apprentice, Jack Kearney to take five pounds off Eilean Dubh's back. Kearney has only had two rides in England so far, but he's ridden 15 winners on home soil during 2023, scoring for trainers like Richard O'Brien, Gordon Elliott and Ger Lyons. Kearney is experienced enough not to be phased by the Cambridgeshire Meeting stage and his claimer reduces Eilean Dubh's burden to just 8-9.

Verdict

Terwada and Eilean Dubh are our two against the field in the 2023 Cambridgeshire Handicap.
