Saturday’s televised action on ITV Racing at Newmarket is headlined by the Cesarewitch Handicap.

This staying handicap is one of the biggest betting races of the year, and has been staged on the Rowley Mile for 45-years. Given the distance the horses have to travel, National Hunt trainers often target this race, with names like Philip Hobbs, Martin Pipe and Nicky Henderson featuring on the honour’s boards.

In our guide to Saturday’s race, we’ve looked through the current odds and picked out some keys trends, before highlighting which horses we think you should back.

Coltrane is clearly a very progressive young horse, but history is against the current market leader. As we see in the trends above, form over two miles is vitally important, and there’ve only two three-year-olds have managed to win the Cesarewitch in the last 30 years.

Willie Mullins has, again, called upon the services of Jason Watson, who rode Stratum to victory for Ireland’s Champion jumps Trainer 12 months ago. Watson will ride Great White Shark, who won over hurdles at the Galway Festival last time out, and finished tenth in last year’s Cesarewitch off a mark three-pounds higher than the rating he brings back to Newmarket.

While Great White Shark does look dangerously handicapped, the first horse I want to back is Mark Johnston’s MONDAIN.

Johnston’s four-year-old continued his strong record over two miles up at Ayr last month, staying on strongly to beat experienced stayer Fun Mac by almost six lengths. This year’s Northumberland Vase winner has now won three of his four starts over two miles, with his only defeat coming at Ascot this year, where he was narrowly beaten into second by Island Brave.

Andrea Atzeni was a claimer when he rode three-year-old Darley Sun to victory in the Cesarewitch. Johnston has trained the winner of this handicap on three occasions, and I really think Mondain is a progressive stayer who could strike again for Britain’s most prolific trainer.

Three horses tick all ten 2020 Cesarewitch Stakes trends. Just Hubert stayed on gamely to win the two-and-a-half-mile Goodwood Handicap earlier in the summer, and finished second on his most recent start. Lynwood Gold won the Ebor Trial at the Curragh in July, and has also tasted success over hurdles during 2020.

The trendsetter who really captures my imagination, though, is WHIRLING DERVISH, who can be found at a lengthy price of 33/1.

Gavin Cromwell’s five-year-old has had a busy campaign running over hurdles this year, claiming his maiden victory over jumps at Kilbeggan in August. While in the care of Jessica Harrington, Whirling Dervish secured some hugely impressive wins on the flat, finishing second to 2019 Ebor winner Mustajeer in a Listed contest, while also beating 115-rated Twilight Payment in a 14-furlong contest.

Whirling Dervish currently sits six-pounds short of his career-high flat mark. Cromwell has enlisted the services of young jockey Kieran O’Neill - who’s ridden winners for John Gosden this season, and guided Jedd O’Keeffe’s Only Spoofing to victory in a handicap at Glorious Goodwood.

Irish trainers have a good recent record in the Cesarewitch and Cromwell will fancy Whirling Dervish’s chance of running well beyond his current odds.

Verdict

Mondain remains a stayer on the up and his record over two miles is very impressive. I'll be having a decent punt on Mark Johnston's charge at 16/1.

Whirling Dervish ticked all the trend boxes, and Gavin Cromwell's raider boasts some really strong form on the flat. He looks overpriced on 33/1.
