The opening day of Chester's May Festival is headlined by a key Epsom Derby trial, the Chester Vase. Last year's renewal of this historic race took a tragic twist, as Hidden Law broke down just moments after his stunning victory, and couldn't be saved by the on-course vets.

2025 Chester Vase Runners
Aidan O'Brien has won this Derby trial on ten occasions and sends Lambourn over to Britain for the first time. A winner of the Criterium de l'Ouest at Craon last August, Ryan Moore's mount finished last of five in the Beresford Stakes last term, but was much more competitive on his reappearance, following Delcroix home in the Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown.
Ralph Beckett runs two in Wednesday's feature, with Rossa Ryan partnering Pinhole, who won an all-weather maiden on his first start since moving from Sir Michael Stoute's yard. Hector Crouch partners with Square D'Alboni, who completed a hat-trick in the autumn with an emphatic success in the Prix Isonomy.
Karl Burke's Convergent will defend an unbeaten record as he steps up into Group class for the first time. Andrew Balding's Furthur has already proven his stamina, having made a winning reappearance over 11 furlongs at Newbury.
William Buick rides Aidan O'Brien's second-string, Thrice. Charlie Johnston's Group Three winner, Lazy Griff makes his return to action. John O'Neill's raider, Faire La Nouba - rated just 49 - completes the line-up.
2025 Chester Vase Tips
LAMBOURN'S (9/4) credentials are hard to knock and, despite a wide draw in stall seven, he could take Aidan O'Brien's tally of Chester Vase victories to 11.
Having made a winning debut on nice ground at Killarney, Lambourn proved he could handle softer conditions with a hard-fought Listed success at Craon in August. O'Brien's youngster then finished an outpaced fifth in the Beresford Stakes, but the first two both went on to land Group Ones in the autumn, and we've already seen Windlord and Trinity College go close in Derby Trials this season.
Delacroix established himself as a leading Derby contender in the Ballysax Stakes. Lambourn, again, found himself outpaced when the pace picked up, but Ronan Whelan's mount saw out ten furlongs well to finish a good second.
Lambourn is proven at Group level and is bred to be at his best over middle distances. O'Brien's stable are in excellent form and, with that Leopardstown run under his belt, I expect Lambourn will be very hard to beat.
