The Grade One Clarence House Chase headlines Saturday's card at Ascot. Poor weather has meant that the last two renewals of this historic race were staged at Cheltenham, and winners of the Clarence House often go on to challenge in the Champion Chase during the famous Cheltenham Festival.

2025 Clarence House Chase Entries

The winners of 14 Grade Ones between them will clash for the first time in Saturday's main event at Ascot. Nicky Henderson's Jonbon tops the market, having added a second Tingle Creek and second Shloer Chase to his CV during the first half of the season.

Willie Mullins sends over Energumene, who was beaten by Shishkin in a thrilling Clarence House back in 2022. Mullins' 11-year-old went on to win the next two renewals of the Champion Chase at Cheltenham, and returned from a year-long absence in November with an easy victory in the Hilly Way Chase.

Jonbon's regular sparing partners, Edwardstone and Boothill line up in opposition again. Edwwardstone was last seen finishing second under top-weight in the Wayward Lad at Kempton, with Boothill looking to bounce back after a hefty fall in that Limited Handicap.

2025 Clarence House Chase Tips

I'm finding it hard to look beyond JONBON (4/6) in Saturday's main event. Away from the Cheltenham Festival, Nicky Henderson's star is unbeaten over fences, winning two Celebration Chases, two Shloer Chases, two Tingle Creeks and the Melling Chase, beating proven Grade One horses - and multiple Grade One winners - on numerous occasions.

Jonbon is at his best around Sandown, which gives me hope that he'll take well to the similar track here at Ascot. Good to soft ground should be perfect for all four of the runners and Jonbon has two of his three rivals covered, having beaten both Edwardstone and Boothill on all seven of their meetings.

Energumene is the fly in the ointment. Willie Mullins' two-time Champion Chase winner made his return from injury in the Hilly Way Chase at Cork, where he beat future King George winner Banbridge quite comfortably.

Before each of his Champion Chase wins, Energumene was beaten on British soil. Paul Townend's mount lost out to Shishkin in a thriller the last time the Clarence House was run at Ascot, before a third-place finish behind Editeur Du Gite when the 2023 renewal was run at Cheltenham.

Mullins' star is 11 years old now and Willie will be desperate to get Energumene back to the Champion Chase in the best shape possible. He won't mind seeing his raider lose on Saturday if the run puts him spot-on for the Cheltenham Festival.
