Two Group Ones take place on Oaks day at the Epsom Derby Festival. The first of those is the Coronation Cup, which was first run at Epsom Downs in 1902 and has been won by legendary names like Pretty Polly, Mill Reef and the only three-time winner, Sir Nicholas Abbey.

2024 Coronation Cup Runners

While she can be a little in and out, Emily Upjohn's two previous runs at Epsom have been excellent. The Gosden's mare was just touched off in the 2022 Oaks by Tuesday, before securing an impressive victory in this race 12 months ago.

Soft ground, however, might not be ideal for the favourite, making executing her fast-finishing style much more difficult. If she can recreate her winning effort from 12 months ago, then Emily Upjohn will retain her crown, but I'd rather leave her alone at the current prices.

Like Emily Upjohn, Feed The Flame will likely be held up on his first start around Epsom. Cristian Demuro's mount is a Group One winner and ran well over an insufficient trip in the Prix Ganay on his most recent start. Stepping back up in trip will certainly suit.

Time Lock will also be ridden patiently and I'm not sure whether she'll be good enough to cope. Hamish will relish the extra juice in the ground, but he too has plenty to prove up in Group One company.

With no other potential front-runners in the field, the stage could be set for another Ryan Moore masterclass aboard LUXEMBOURG (7/2). Moore got his fractions spot on in last year's Tattersalls Gold Cup, where Aidan O'Brien's star led from pillar to post to record his third Group One success.

Luxembourg attempted similar tactics in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes and the Irish Champions Stakes, finishing second to top-class rivals in Mostahdaf and Auguste Rodin. Moore's mount was only beaten a short-head by the great Romantic Warrior in the Hong Kong Cup in December and was last seen running out in the Middle East, placing fourth in the Neom Cup before a limp effort in the Dubai Turf.

After that poor effort at Meydan, Aidan O'Brien was eager to step his star back up in distance. Luxembourg has only been tried over a mile-and-a-half twice, with those runs coming in the Arc and the King George. Although he was fairly well beaten, there were no indications in either of those races that O'Brien's five-year-old didn't see out the trip. Moore should be able to ride Friday's race as he finds it and front-running tactics often bear fruit on the uphill climb to the line at Epsom.

If Ryan Moore can grab an uncontested lead, then Luxembourg may be very difficult to peg back in Friday's Coronation Cup. I'll be backing him over favourite Emily Upjohn.
