Day two of the St Leger meeting at Doncaster will be headlined by the Doncaster Cup. This Group Two - which was first run way back in 1766 - has been won by many of the most notable stayers in the history of the sport, including Brown Jack, Double Trigger, Estimate and Stradivarius.

Coltrane tops the betting for Friday's feature at Doncaster, despite that three-pound penalty for his recent victory in the Lonsdale Cup at the Ebor Festival. Sitting second in the market is two-time Long Distance Cup winner Trueshan, who hasn't been seen since a fourth-place finish behind Coltrane at Ascot back in May.

Ebor runner-up, Sweet William steps up to Graded company for the first time and he'll be partnered by Rab Havlin. Ryan Moore and Aidan O'Brien team up with Broome, who's been out of form since returning from Dubai. Ian Williams' The Grand Visir rounds off the field.

Sweet William is a very interesting runner for John and Thady Gosden. Rab Havlin's mount has looked like a Group performer running in handicaps all season and a rating of 103 underplays how much ability this horse possesses.

That being said, Gosden's four-year-old is in with two horses who have proven themselves at the highest level. Sweet William will have to raise his game massively to defeat the market leaders.

Coltrane got the better of TRUESHAN when the two met on good-to-soft ground in this race 12 months ago. Trueshan was sent off as the 2/9 favourite that day, but Hollie Doyle's mount wandered around when he came under pressure in the final two furlongs and Coltrane hung on gamely to claim a narrow victory.

Trueshan has endured a disappointing campaign thus far. Alan King's seven-year-old was beaten by Rajinksy on his reappearance at Nottingham and was beaten seven lengths by Coltrane in the Sagaro Stakes. A wind operation followed soon after that poor performance. Fast ground then meant Trueshan missed the Ascot Gold Cup and King didn't declare his stable star in the Goodwood Cup, a Group One he won back in 2021.

Coltrane, in contrast, has enjoyed another successful season, placing at Ascot and Goodwood before winning at York last month. Oisin Murphy's mount certainly warrants favouritism. I just think that coming into the race fresh could work in Trueshan's favour and ever
