Ebor Festival Day Three Tips

Race 1 - Sky Bet Handicap Tips

Zabeel Champion1:45pm Sky Bet Handicap (Class 2) 1m4f5/2 INTO 7/4
New customers only. 21+ T&Cs and wagering requirements apply.William Hill is operated by WHG (International) Limited, a company registered in Gibraltar. William Hill is licensed and regulated by the UK Gambling Commission (Number: 000-039225 R-319373-009) for customers in Great Britain, and licensed by the Gibraltar Government and regulated by the Gibraltar Gambling Commissioner (RGL no. 034 & 042) for all other customers.

Clearly, the best-handicapped horse in this race is ZABEEL CHAMPION, and Mark Johnston's three-year-old looks a solid bet in the opener.

Having made all to win twice at Newmarket, Zabeel Champion went for three in a row at Glorious Goodwood earlier this month. Sadly, an awkward start meant he couldn't grab his customary prominent position, and eventually had to settle for second behind surprise winner, Junkanoo.

A galloping track like York will suit Zabeel Champion more than Goodwood, and there's plenty of staying ability in his breeding, so stepping up to 12 furlongs may really suit.

Race 2 - Lonsdale Cup Tips

Nayef Road2:15pm Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup Stakes (Group 2) 2m½f11/4 INTO 5/2

There's no doubting Enbihaar is a very good horse, but I can't work out for the life of me why NAYEF ROAD isn't the favourite.

Mark Johnston's stayer comfortably won the Sagaro Stakes on his reappearance, and only Stradivarius finished ahead of Nayef Road in the Ascot Gold Cup and the Goodwood Cup.

Stradivarius is not here to reoppose Nayef Road, who's proven over the distance on all kinds of ground. At 11/4, Andrea Atzeni's mount looks an excellent bet.

Race 3 - Gimcrack Stakes Tips

I'm really keen on the chances of MYSTERY SMILES in this year's Gimcrack. Andrew Balding's youngster is two-from-two during his short career, winning over five furlongs on debut before beating Zamaani at Chester last time out.

What I like about this son of Mehmas is how well he's responded to pressure. Silvestre De Sousa was hard at work just after half-way on his debut at Windsor, and Mystery Smiles powered through the gears to beat a future winner by three lengths. Again at Chester, De Sousa had to stoke his mount up, by Balding's juvenile responded again, striding clear of a rival rated 97 in the final half-furlong.

This doesn't look the strongest of Gimcrack's, especially after Supremacy came out, and I think Mystery Smiles offers excellent each-way value at 8/1.

Race 5 - Convivial Maiden Stakes Tips

Naval Crown3:45pm British Stallion Studs EBF Convivial Maiden Stakes (Plus 10 Race) 7fGET 6/4 HERE

With Maximal now out of the running, I'll have to hang my hat on NAVAL CROWN, for Charlie Appleby and Godolphin. Naval Crown finished third behind a future Group Two placer on debut, before repeating that result behind Chindit in the Listed Pat Eddery Stakes. William Buick's mount boasts some excellent experience and should claim a maiden victory here.

Race 6 - Fillies' Handicap Tips

First Kingdom E/W4:15pm British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies' Handicap (Class 2) 1m2½f11/1 INTO 13/2

I often prefer to back outsiders in fillies handicaps and Listed races, as I think they're very hard to predict. One who looks overpriced to me is FIRST KINGDOM, who made all to win over a mile at Kempton and Haydock in the early stages of the season.

William Haggas' filly faded from the front to finish sixth in a Listed race in France last time out, but the form of that race looks very strong and front-running tactics don't often bare-fruit on the other side of the channel. Tom Marquand's mount is a cracking each-way bet.

Race 7 - Sky Bet Mile Stakes Tips

It's a real shame this high-quality handicap wasn't moved forward to appear on ITV. There are plenty of classy milers in here, and fully warrants a television slot.

Visinari sits eight pounds clear of his closest rival at the top of the ratings, leaving plenty of progressive milers carrying comfortable weights, and I fancy taking another punt on JOHAN.

James Doyle gave William Haggas' colt a cracking ride at Newbury the day racing resumed, passing practically all his rivals with a perfectly-timed challenge to win. Things didn't quite go to place for Tom Marquand at Ascot last time out, but Doyle resumes his partnership with Johan on Friday, and I still think this classy three-year-old is capable of progressing beyond his current mark.
