Friday’s ITV Racing Tips

Race 1 – Curragh – Maiden

LOUGH CUTRA Finished second on debut at the Curragh last season. Ger Lyon’s charge then travelled nicely for much of his reappearance at Naas, but couldn’t pick up on heavy ground and lost out by less than a length. The winner that day, Russian Emperor was only beaten half-a-length in the Derby Trial earlier this week, and Lough Cutra looks a solid each-way bet stepping up in distance.

JOHAN was twice beaten by Military March last season, finishing sixth of eight in the Autumn Stakes when last seen. In-between those defeats, Williams Haggas’ colt secured two impressive wins, receiving an RPR of 87 for a bloodless six-length triumph at Musselburgh in September. An opening handicap mark of 88 looks lenient.

Three-year-old DARK VADER was only beaten four lengths in a Listed race three days ago, where he made the running before dropping back in the closing stages. Joseph O’Brien’s charge returns to six-furlongs here and Dylan McMonagle takes a valuable seven-pounds off his back. I won't be having much of a bet in this tricky handicap, but he looks a decent each-way option.

Race 3 – Newbury - Royal Ascot Special Handicap

Roger Charlton boasts an excellent strike record at Newbury over the last five years, and he’ll have high hopes for BLUE MIST. Although he failed to win, Blue Mist ran some promising races over seven furlongs last season, finishing sixth in the Wokingham and third in the Gigaset International. Jason Watson’s mount returns to action one pound lower in the handicap than the mark he carried into the International Handicap, and Blue Mist ran well here at Newbury on his second juvenile start.

It was hard not to be impressed with UNITED FRONT’S win at Dundalk in February. Yes, he was the odds-on favourite, but Seamie Heffernan’s mount cantered to an effortless four-length triumph. The top three in the weights sit prominently in the market here, suggesting there’s no-one further down the betting with a great deal of untapped potential. United Front’s opening handicap mark of 90 looks extremely workable.

Mackaar could be one to watch further down the betting, but there’s no doubt the one with the biggest scope for improvement here is AWAY HE GOES. Ismael Mohammed’s charge has only been beaten by St Leger king Logician so far in his career. Away He Goes twice beat 90-rated Passion And Glory in July – once here at Newbury, and again over this trip at Newmarket. This son of Farhh should have no trouble progressing beyond his current mark during the coming season.

MYTHICAL may have only won once during his two-year-old season, but finished third over this trip in the Group One Criterium Saint Cloud. The favourite is so far ahead of his closest rival in terms of rating and experience. Soft ground would have been ideal, but Mythical should have more than enough about him to claim this Group Three prize before going onto the Derby.

Race 7 – Newbury - Beaten By A Head Handicap

Again, this won’t be a big betting race for me, but I might have just a small each-way saver on BADENSCOTCH. Dean Ivory's charge is now just three-pound higher than his last winning mark, having slid down from a career-high rating of 93. Badenscotch ran really well to be placed off 90 in a big handicap at York in October, and could run beyond his odds here.

Race 8 – Curragh – Irish 2000 Guineas

Siskin has been weak in the betting leading up to Friday’s main event, which doesn’t surprise me in the slightest. I never once through Ger Lyon’s star was crying out for a mile during his unbeaten two-year-old campaign, and Monarch of Egypt hardly boosted the favourite’s form when he ran in the Middle Park and the Dewhurst later in the autumn.

Verdict

Mythical looks a solid bet to extend Aidan O'Brien's fantastic record in the Gallinule Stakes and 7/4 looks an Excellent price. He'll be my NAP of the day.

Next best is Away He Goes, who could progress up to pattern-race company this term. 7/1 is an excellent each-way price.
