The November Meeting draws to a close at Cheltenham on Sunday afternoon, where the card is headlined by the Greatwood Hurdle. This Grade Three handicap was often used as a launching pad for Champion Hurdle hopefuls, with the likes of Rooster Booster and Sizing Europe winning this handicap before collecting Grade One honours later in the season.

We've taken a look through the latest betting for the Greatwood and listed some key recurring trends, before picking out our best betting tips.

Paul Byrne teamed up with Emmet Mullins to win this race in 2020 with The Shunter, who was backed into 13/2 before the off. Byrne's blue silks will be carried into this year's Greatwood by Onlyamatteroftime - trained this time by Emmet's uncle, Willie Mullins - and the sole Irish raider in the field has already been punted into 3/1.

12 months ago, Emmet Mullins and Paul Byrne were represented by Thousand Tears, who was incredibly well-backed during the build-up, drifted out to 18/1 on the day of the race and ran accordingly. Willie has had two runners in Britain for Byrne so far this term - Alvaniy was well beaten at odds of 1/3 at Newton Abbott, before a 37-length defeat in a handicap on Charlie Hall day, while Catch Yourself On finished ninth of 15 behind The Kemble Brewery in a bumper here at Cheltenham, having been sent off as the 2/1 favourite.

Onlyamatteroftime was beaten ten lengths on his hurdles debut at Roscommon in July, and ran out when attempting to challenge in an awful handicap at Cork in August. Mullins' raider will run off a ten-pound higher mark when he makes his British debut on Sunday. I wouldn't back Onlyamatteroftime with Monopoly money.

2023 Greatwood Handicap Hurdle Tip 1 - Iberico Lord

I included Nemean Lion in my 20 To Follow for the new jumps season, so I was delighted to see Kerry Lee's six-year-old win the Welsh Champion Hurdle on his reappearance. The handicapper has slapped Nemean Lion with a five-pound hike for that victory, meaning Richard Patrick's mount will have to cope with a top-weight of 12-00 in Sunday's feature.

At the opposite end of the weights, we find IBERICO LORD (7/1) who, at this meeting 12 months ago, was thrown straight into the Sharp Novices' Hurdle on his British debut by Nicky Henderson. Aidan Coleman's mount couldn't land a blow in that Grade Two, and went on to suffer a tired fall at the last when booked for third behind Rare Edition and Rubaud at Kempton on Boxing Day.

Henderson's five-year-old wasn't seen again until April, when he chased down a short-priced Paul Nicholls favourite to open his account over hurdles at Stratford. Iberico Lord then gave an excellent account of himself in the Novices' Championship Finale at Sandown, staying on strongly to finish half-a-length behind stablemate and fellow JP McManus flagbearer, Under Control.

The winner that day will be taken down the Mares' Hurdle route this season, according to the quotes from Nicky Henderson's stable tour. The third and fourth from that handicap at Sandown have both come out and won well this autumn, so the six-pound rise Iberico Lord received doesn't seem overly harsh.

In that stable tour, Henderson felt there was much more to come from Iberico Lord over hurdles, which might be a pointer as to why Nico De Boinville has chosen to ride this improving five-year-old over Henderson's supposed Mares' Hurdle contender, Luccia.

2023 Greatwood Handicap Hurdle Tip 2 - Go Dante

Now that the final field has been confirmed, I'm going to take a punt on GO DANTE (25/1) at a lengthy price.

Big things were expected of Olly Murphy's seven-year-old after he won his bumper at Wetherby. Go Dante was then beaten on his first two starts over hurdles and finished fourth in the 2021 Challow Hurdle, before suffering a setback that would keep him out until the start of this year.

After a pipe-opener at Uttoxeter, Go Dante ran well under 12-00 at Chepstow before opening his account over hurdles with an easy victory on soft ground at Wetherby. Jamie Codd then rode Murphy's novice in the Conditional Jockey's Handicap on Topham day at Aintree, where Go Dante got outpaced on quick ground and ran into traffic as he attempted to make late in-roads.

Go Dante doesn't have the sexy profile of some near the head of the market, but I'm certain that this talented horse is yet to reach his full potential and slower ground on Sunday will certainly suit.

Verdict

Iberico Lord is our first selection for the 2023 Greatwood Hurdle. We've also backed Go Dante since the field was confirmed.
