An excellent card at Exeter on Friday is headlined by the Haldon Gold Cup. This Grade Two handicap has been used as a starting point for plenty of talented chasers, with the likes of Viking Flagship, Best Mate and Cue Card featuring on the roll of honour.
Here's our free guide to the 2024 Haldon Gold Cup, including our best betting tips.

2024 Haldon Gold Cup Runners
Topping the betting for Friday's feature at Exeter is JPR One. Joe Tizzard's star was one of the top novice chasers in the UK last season, winning the Lightning Novices' Chase at Lingfield in January, before a luckless run when seventh in the Arkle at Cheltenham.
Djelo also won a Grade Two in novice company last season, before placing in both the Scilly Isles and the Turners' Novices' Chases. Harry and Dan Skelton team up with Etalon, who won his first three start over fences before a disappointing seventh in the Maghull.
Bryony Frost returns in time from France to ride Sans Bruit, who struck in the Red Rum Handicap at Aintree's Grand National meeting. Dan Skelton will also run the returning Heltenham, who'll be ridden by Ciaran Gethings. Joe Tizzard's second runner, Scarface completes the field, and he'll be partnered by Harry Cobden.
2024 Haldon Gold Cup Tips
Winners of the Haldon Gold Cup have usually either been tried in top-level company, or go on to win open Grade One or Two contests later in the season. Etalon and Sans Bruit progressed nicely through handicaps last term, but neither has been tested at the highest level. The two at the top of the weights have, however, and neither has to give the handicappers a considerable amount of weight.
The Tizzards family have always loved this Grade Two and, with Joe's horses currently in good form, JPR One is a worthy favourite. That being said, DJELO (4/1) was heavily backed to beat that rival when the two were scheduled to meet at Lingfield last January and he appeals most from a betting standpoint.
Venetia Williams' star was backed into favouritism for the Lightning Novices' Chase, having followed two impressive handicap wins with a six-length romp in the Grade Two Noel Novices' Chase. Sadly, Charlie Deutsch's mount was brought down when Matata flung himself left across the opening fence - a manoeuvre that also inconvenienced second-favourite, Master Chewy, making JPR One's task even easier.
Djelo was then held up well off the pace in two Grade Ones over two-and-a-half miles, staying on to place in both the Scilly Isles and the Turners at Cheltenham. Williams' six-year-old then dropped back down to two miles for the Maghull at Aintree but, for the second season in a row, Djelo was over the top come the spring and failed to land a blow.
All of Djelo's victories have come at the start of the season. Unlike many of Venetia's horses, this speedy chaser seems to enjoy a bit of good in the going and he boasts course-winning form from his days over hurdles. This in-between distance should be ideal for Djelo too. He'll be my selection at 4/1.
