2024 Irish 1000 Guineas Entries

A minor setback forced Opera Singer to miss her intended reappearance in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket last month. Aidan O'Brien's Prix Marcel Boussac winner is the marginal favourite to land Classic glory on her return to action, despite the trainer saying that she'll improve for Sunday's outing.

Porta Fortuna was rivalling Opera Singer for favouritism, but Donnacha O'Brien's Newmarket runner-up didn't feature in the final field. Moyglare winner, Fallen Angel returns to the scene of her Group One triumph, having finished eighth as the favourite on her return in the 1000 Guineas.

Willie McCreery will be represented by Moyglare runner-up Vespertilio, who finished a close third in the French 1000 Guineas two weeks ago. Paddy Twomey is doubly represented by unbeaten Harry Angel filly A Lilax Rolla, and Salsabil Stakes runner-up Purple Lily.

Two-time Group Three placer, Buttons and the third from last month's Salsabil Stakes, Everlasting could join stablemate Opera Singer in the field. Other likely runners in Sunday's Classic include Dermot Weld's once-raced Siyouni filly Azada, Ralph Beckett's raider Skellet, and Joseph Murphy's recent Killarney winner, Alpheratz.

2024 Irish 2000 Guineas Tips

Opera Singer's need for an outing and the absence of Porta Fortuna blows Sunday's Classic wide open. Fallen Angel is better than what she produced at Newmarket and Verspertilio is clearly very talented. However, given the size of the field and how unpredictable this flat season has been so far, I don't fancy backing anything at a single-figure price.

I've got my eye on Ezeliya in the Epsom Oaks, so I'd like to see the form of her Salsabil Stakes win boosted this weekend. PURPLE LILY (10/1) came out second-best in a thrilling finish that day, after Billy Lee lost his irons in the crucial closing stages.

Purple Lily ran on well to score on her only juvenile start at Galway, beating four fillies rated in the 90s quite comfortably. On her three-year-old reappearance, Paddy Twomey's star ran out and easy winner over a mile at Naas, beating 108-rated Portland by three lengths, when giving Aidan O'Brien's colt five pounds at the weights.

Despite her loss in the Salsabil, Purple Lily still ran a cracking race. Calyx has proven himself to be a versatile sire, but speed has been his progeny's greatest asset. Purple Lily's dam - herself by a sprinting sire in Approve - won her only race over a mile, failing to see out further trips, so this drop back in trip seems sensible.

I won't be backing Purple Lily until the morning of the Irish 1000 Guineas, as there's a chance she could drift if money arrives for more fancied horses. Even at her current price of 10/1, she represents value in an open enough contest.

Verdict

Everything Purple Lily has done thus far suggests that she's got plenty of class. She'll be my selection in the 2024 Irish 1000 Guineas.
