The Irish Gold Cup headlines the opening day of racing at the Dublin Racing Festival. This prestigious Grade One has been won by many of Ireland's finest chasers and it's the two-time defending champion who dominates the betting for this year's renewal.

2025 Irish Gold Cup Tips

This is, for all intents and purposes, a two-horse race. As he usually does at the Dublin Racing Festival, Willie Mullins will probably run all of his current entrants. Embassy Gardens isn't nearly as capable as his two stablemates at the head of the betting and I can't see I Am Maximus, Grangeclare West or Minella Cocooner pulling up any trees as they prepare for Cheltenham or the Grand National.

I remain a huge fan of Monty's Star, but Henry De Bromhead's horses are running so badly that I can't bring myself to back him. Hewick's camp won't have enjoyed the rain that fell in the Leopardstown area this week. Inothewayurthinkin is the only horse that offers each-way value, but even then - if the top two complete - you're only betting on him finishing third.

I didn't think Fact To File ran badly at all in the Savills Chase. Mark Walsh's mount jumped better in the John Durkan, but I was impressed with the way he closed the gap between himself and GALOPIN DES CHAMPS (8/13) on the run to the final flight.

Ultimately, Fact To File's effort was in-vein. Galopin Des Champs, who had jumped imperiously at the front throughout, produced another superb leap at the last and sprinted five lengths clear of his younger rival on the short run to the line.

I don't think I've seen a staying chaser more suited to a track than Galopin Des Champs is to Leopardstown. For all his heroics at the Cheltenham Festival, Willie Mullins' star has been simply peerless around this circuit - which perfectly suits his blend of stamina and explosivity.

It's well-worth Fact To File having another crack at the odds-on favourite, as a second defeat could see the team switch their focus to the Ryanair Chase. The chances of the Savills Chase form being reversed seem extremely slim. I don't think I'll ever back Galopin Des Champs to lose around Leopardstown.
