Ebor Festival Day Three Tips - Friday 19th August

Race 1 - Sky Bet Handicap Tips

CORMIER is a horse I've been following over hurdles. Brian Ellison's strong-travelling six-year-old won the Morebattle Hurdle at Kelso last March, before finishing a creditable seventh in the County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

On his return to the flat at Chester, Cormier was drawn wide and posted wide throughout, and still managed to run out a comfortable winner. The handicapper has pushed David Allan's mount up to 88, but that career-high flat mark is still some 50 pounds short of his hurdles rating, so there's no doubting that Cormier remains well handicapped in this sphere.

I'm also going to have a punt on ANGEL POWER, who hit the line hard after getting stuck in traffic on her first start over this trip at the Shergar Cup.

Roger Varian's filly won a Class 2 handicap at this meeting back in 2020, before following up with Group Two and Three victories. Angel Power now sits 12 pounds short of the peak rating she reached at the end of the 2020 season and that run at Ascot could signal a return to top form.

Race 2 - Lonsdale Cup Tips

Stradivarius tops the betting, as he looks to make it seven-from-seven around York. Despite that 100% record, I would much rather back TRUESHAN, who finished a place behind the market leader in the Goodwood Cup.

Alan King rolled the dice at Goodwood, as the ground was quicker than ideal. Trueshan travelled powerfully throughout the race and Hollie Doyle decided to make an early move, pushing her mount into contention three furlongs from home. Ultimately, Trueshan couldn't sustain his challenge, settling for third as Kyprios and Stradivarius fought out a thrilling finish.

Times on day one of the Ebor Festival suggested the going was on the easier side of good and Thursday evening's downpour should ensure the ground at York is slower than it was at York. On softer ground, Trueshan is better than Stradivarius and I fancy Doyle will get her tactics spot on this time around.

Race 3 - Gimcrack Stakes Tips

Royal Scotsman ran out a clear-cut winner of the Richmond Stakes at Glorious Goodwood and I wouldn't be surprised to see the Cole's rising star go in again. The favourite does, however, have a three-pound penalty to contend with on Friday and there are several dangerous rivals sitting on appealing prices.

WAITING ALL NIGHT will enter his third Group Two of the season, having placed fifth in both the Coventry and the July Stakes. Richard Spencer's charge was last seen following the ultra-impressive Naval Power home in the Pat Eddery Stakes and this drop back down to six furlongs seems sensible. Given his experiences and the company he's kept this season, Waiting All Night looks overpriced at 25/1.

Race 4 - Nunthorpe Stakes Tips

Race 5 - Fillies' Handicap Tips

There have only been two previous runnings of this handicap and both were won by three-year-olds. Five of the top six in the betting for Friday's renewal represent that age group and I fancy SHAMPION could be well-treated off this opening mark of 84.

Roger Varian's filly was slowly away and finished fourth on debut, before plugging on well to place second behind an odds-on John Gosden favourite at Haydock. On her first start over ten furlongs, Shampion put some half-decent rivals to the sword with a power-packed display at Windsor. Roger Varian's filly looked to have plenty left in the locker that day and she'll be getting weight from nine of her ten rivals.
