ITV Racing Tips - Saturday 20th August

Race 1 - Strensall Stakes Tips

There hasn't been a three-year-old winner of the Strensall since 2009, but that losing run could come to an end on Saturday, as MIGHTY ULYSEES is very hard to oppose.

John Gosden's colt was beaten less than a length in the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot and comfortably saw off market rival Alflaila when winning the Henry Cecil Stakes last time out. Mighty Ulysses is already the highest-rated runner in the field, with the potential to progress even further during the final third of the season.

Race 2 - Atalanta Stakes Tips

The Gosden's could be celebrating an early, across-the-cards double on Saturday, as I fancy GRANDE DAME will take plenty of beating in our first of two Group races from Sandown.

James Doyle's mount ran out an easy winner of the Coral Distaff here back in July, beating Oscula - who's won two Group Threes since - by over three lengths. Grande Dame looked far better than Listed company that day and should have the beating of this field.

Race 3 - Melrose Handicap Tips

An easy case can be made for Soulcombe, who's gone from strength-to-strength since going handicapping and found trouble in running at Goodwood last time out. Charlie Appleby has won two of the last four renewals of the Melrose, so neither Wild Crusade nor Al Nafir can be passed over too lightly.

The one who intrigues me most at a tasty price is AIMERIC, who finished some ten lengths ahead of Soulcombe when they met in a maiden at Newmarket.

Having finished a slow-starting second behind Savvy Knight on debut, Aimeric tried to make the running at Newmarket, but was passed by three classy rivals in Warren Point, Special Envoy and Mugader - winners of five races between them since - on the run to the line.

Aimeric got the better of another future winner, El Habeed to open his account at Chester last time out. Roger Varian's mount responded to pressure really well that day and was doing his best work in the closing stages of that 12-and-a-half-furlong contest. This opening mark of 92 could turn out to be fairly lenient.

Race 4 - Solario Stakes Tips

Desert Hero and Defence Of Fort both looked talented when winning on debut and could be big players if they've taken a mental step forwards.

SILVER KNOTT produced an accomplished performance to win at Kempton last time out. Charlie Appleby's charge finished fourth behind Acomb Stakes winner, Chaldean and two future winners on debut and, although he didn't beat much at Kempton, the odds-on favourite did it well.

James Doyle and Charlie Appleby combined to win this Group Three with future Derby winner, Masar in 2017 and Silver Knott is bred to be more than decent.

Race 5 - City Of York Stakes Tips

Four of the top five from the Lennox Stakes at Glorious Goodwood clash again in this Group Two. Add dangerous runners like Al Suhail, Brad The Brief, Rohaan and Jumby into the mix, and it's no wonder why the bookies are going 9/2 the field.

The one I feel offers the greatest amount of value is KINROSS, who finished second to Sandrine at Goodwood. Whereas the winner had a clear path to the post down the centre of the track, Frankie Dettori had to dart inside and squeeze through a gap on the rail to make his challenge, and Kinross still only lost out by a neck.

Ralph Beckett's five-year-old is a proven winner at this level and seven furlongs is undoubtedly his best trip. I doubt you'll get 11/2 about Kinross on the day of the race.

Race 7 - Constantine Handicap Tips

A first prize of £51k has attracted a classy field for the first running of this six-furlong handicap, including two-time Steward's Cup winner Commanche Falls, who tops the weights off his fresh mark of 109.

Considering how nicely he won at Ripon last time out, and the handicapper's decision to only up his mark by four pounds, I'm struggling to see why ALEEZDANCER is sitting so far adrift of the market leaders.

Kevin Ryan's charge ran some decent races over seven furlongs during the first half of the season, including a close third behind Escobar here at York. Aleezdancer made it three wins from seven starts over six furlongs with that defeat of Dakota Gold at Ripon and I could see Rowan Scott's mount running another good race from stall 11.
