ITV Racing Tips - Saturday 28th January

Race 1 - Clarence House Chase Tips

Willie Mullins saddled the winner when the Clarence House Chase was last staged at Cheltenham and his challenger, ENERGUMENE is extremely hard to oppose.

Paul Townend's mount jumped brilliantly on his first start around Prestbury Park when handing Mullins his first Champion Chase win last season. Energumene wasn't at his fluent best on his reappearance in the Hilly Way Chase, but I felt the favourite got a little lonely and distracted, in what was basically a schooling run around Cork.

The keen-going Editeur Du Gite will either give the favourite some company at the head of affairs, or a target for Paul Townend to aim at Either way, Energumene remains the most likely winner.

Race 2 - Cheltenham Countdown Handicap Chase Tips

Fugitif was one of my best bets of the day when he romped to victory at Chepstow. Richard Hobson's mount has a ten-pound hike in the weights to cope with and I'm not sure that soft, tacky ground will be to his liking. I've also backed Il Ridoto on both of his starts around Cheltenham this term. Paul Nicholls' runner remains on a workable mark, but I haven't been impressed with the way Harry Cobden's mount has finished either of those races and Saturday's going won't help Il Ridoto see out this distance.

Course form is always important in handicap chases around Cheltenham, so I'm going to have a wild punt on CARIBEAN BOY. Nicky Henderson's nine-year-old has twice run over this course-and-distance - both runs coming on good ground - and twice Caribean Boy has made strong late progress after getting outpaced during the early-to-middle portions of those races.

James Bowen's mount always does his best work on softer ground and Henderson's nine-year-old returns to Cheltenham running off a rating that's just two pounds higher than his last winning mark. He could go well at a massive price.

Race 3 - Yorkshire Rose Mares' Hurdle Tips

A much more obvious contender to hand Nicky Henderson an ITV winner on Saturday is EPATANTE, who'll enter Grade Two company for the first time in four years. Henderson's mare - who has twice followed Constitution Hill home this season - sits miles clear of her rivals in the ratings and good ground will be right up her street. With just two paid places available, there's no point in trying to take Epatante on.

Race 4 - Cotswold Chase Tips

Race 5 - River Don Novices' Hurdle Tips

Regardless of whatever the going description might read, the River Don always turns into an attritional affair. I would much rather side with the more experienced runners in this sort of race, so I'm more than happy to leave the twice-raced Stay Away Fay alone and look for a more suitable alternative.

John McConnell won this race with Mahler Mission 12 months ago and GRAND SOIR could make it back-to-back victories for the Irish at Doncaster. Ben Harvey's mount has already run five times over hurdles, winning his last three starts over three miles, beating some capable rivals quite cosily in the process. Grand Soir will have no trouble seeing out this trip and good ground will certainly be to his advantage,

Race 6 - Cleeve Hurdle Tips

Paisley Park is the firm-favourite to add a fourth Cleeve Hurdle to his resume. Despite his recent good form and 100% record in this race, I'll take the favourite on with DASHEL DRASHER, who I backed in the Relkeel Hurdle here on New Years' Day.

Jeremy Scott's charge ran a cracker that day, with only the impressive Marie's Rock proving strong enough to reel Rex Dingle's mount in. Stepping back up to three miles on soft ground should really suit this proven stayer and Dashel Drasher will be very difficult to pass, especially if Paisley Park hits his customary flat spot.

Race 7 - Sky Bet Handicap Chase Tips

Jamie Snowden will be hoping to see a strong showing from Ga Law, who will carry top-weight in this handicap before heading onto the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. There's no doubt that Ga Law has the class to cope with 12 stone, but the favourite has to give stacks of weight to several dangerous rivals and the one I like most at a lengthy price is UNDERSUPERVISION.

Nigel Twiston-Davies' seven-year-old won the Grimthorpe Chase here at Doncaster off just a two-pound lower mark last season. Undersupervision stayed on from a mile off the pace to finish a strong third at Cheltenham in December, before clearly struggling under 12-1 on very soft ground in the Mandarin. Conditions should be much more suitable on Saturday and Sam Twiston-Davies will only have 10-12 to shoulder.

Race 8 - Ballymore Novices' Hurdle Tips

Henri The Second and Pembroke are horses I've been keen to follow this season. Yet, both have question marks next to their name. Pembroke has done all of his winning over the minimum distance and Henri The Second will have to cope with a five-pound penalty for that victory in the Kennel Gate - the form of which is certainly questionable.

I'll take a chance on CAN YOU CALL, who was dropped back to hurdling after winning one of his four starts over fences last season. Following a narrow defeat to a decent rival in American Sniper on his reappearance at Taunton, Can You Call bolted up on heavy ground in what should have been a competitive handicap at Uttoxeter on New Years Eve. Evan Williams' charge made a mockery of his handicap mark that day and he will relish the underfoot conditions.
