Glorious Goodwood kicks off on Tuesday and viewers have an excellent card to look forward to on day one. The Goodwood Cup is the main event on Tuesday's card, which also features the Group Two Vintage Stakes and a cracking renewal of the Lennox Stakes.
MOKTASAAB bolted up here at Goodwood back in April. William Knight's four-year-old went off as the even-money favourite, following an impressive win at Newbury, and put some decent rivals to the sword with an effortless victory off 92.
Callum Shepherd's mount then didn't handle the track when sixth in the Cazoo Handicap at the Epsom Derby Festival. The bookies didn't think Moktasaab would relish the step up to 12 furlongs at Royal Ascot and they were proven right, as the 14/1 shot faded badly in the closing stages.
Those high-profile defeats see Moktasaab returns to Goodwood just three pounds higher in the handicap than when he won here earlier in the season. A much-improved performance is expected.
Holloway Boy took everyone by surprise when he won the Chesham Stakes as a 50/1 debutante at Royal Ascot. The favourite, Alfred Munnings massively underperformed on that day, while the second and fourth-placed runners both finished last in five runner pattern races next time out, so Holloway Boy's form is looking a little shakey.
At the prices, I'll take an each-way punt on GALERON, who's two runs this season have both come here at Goodwood.
Charlie Hills' charge caught the eye late on when staying on to place fifth behind Royal Scotsman on debut. Galeron then kicked clear in the closing stages to comfortably beat a handy filly of Richard Hannon's, who boosted that form with a four length victory of her own next time out.
Galeron's sire, Camacho has produced plenty of precocious juveniles and he's out of a Galileo dam. Kieran Shoemark's mount shouldn't be underestimated.
A quickly-run seven furlongs, around a track like Goodwood which favours late speed, should really suit SACRED.
William Haggas' filly is unbeaten over this distance, beating future Group One winners in both the Nell Gwyn and the Hungerford Stakes in 2021. Sacred's only outing this season came in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes, where she was only beaten a length back in fifth. The favourite seems to have plenty in her favour.
Despite my confidence in Sacred, I can't help but have an each-way saver on SANDRINE, who I've been following throughout the season. Andrew Balding's filly has run with credit in the three big Group One races for three-year-old fillies over a mile this season and could relish this drop back to seven furlongs.
Stall one might not be ideal, especially when the likely pace-setters are drawn high along the stand's rail, but I'm still going to have an each-way punt in EQUALITY.
Charlie Hills' four-year-old ran up to an RPR of 104 when winning on his reappearance at Windsor. Since then, Equality has finished third at Doncaster and Epsom, and recovered fairly well to finish 12th after a terrible start at Ascot last time out. He could still be well-handicapped off his current mark of 91.
Several bring some decent placed form into this wide-open maiden, most notably Mischief Magic and Chartwell House, who impressed last time out.
I'm going to take a chance and back Karl Burke's debutante, ATOMIC IMPACT. Burke seems to have plenty of talented juveniles on his books at the moment and this son of Dandy Man is a half-sibling to Illustrated, who won well at this meeting 12 months ago. Both Burke and jockey, Danny Tudhope have been in excellent form all season. A huge run first time out from Atomic Impact wouldn't be a surprise.
