Glorious Goodwood Day Four Tips - Friday 29th July

Race 1 - Goodwood Handicap Tips

Often, horses are punished for consistency by the handicapper. I don't think that's the case with MELLOW MAGIC who, despite only finishing outside the top three once in 13 career starts, still looks well-handicapped.

Andrew Balding's four-year-old has run well in defeat three times here at Goodwood earlier this season. Mellow Magic then finished a close third behind Zoffee in the Northumberland Vase and was only beaten a head in a two-mile handicap at Chester last time out.

Mellow Magic has clocked RPRs between 88 and 91 in all of her last four starts, but still runs off an official mark of 84 and Harry Davies' claimer reduces her burden to just 8-1.

Race 2 - Thoroughbred Stakes Tips

On seasonal form, I don't see why ROCCHIGIANI sits so far adrift of Checkandchallenge, Bayside Boy and Berkshire Shadow in the betting.

Peter Schiergen's three-year-old attempted to make all in the German 2000 Guineas, and only the talented Maljoom was able to pass him. Last time out in the Jersey Stakes, Rocchigiani found himself a little outpaced by the seven-furlong specialists, but stayed on gamely to pass the post just two lengths behind Noble Truth in fifth.

Most racecourses in Germany are oval-shaped with tight bends, so Goodwood racecourse could suit Rocchigiani well. Even with just two places available, Tom Marquand's mount looks a solid each-way bet at 8/1.

Race 3 - Golden Mile Handicap Tips

In the last decade, only two horses drawn wider than stall five have won this handicap. In that time, 78% of the top five placers was drawn in stall 11 or lower, a stat which won't please connections of Shining Blue or Jimi Hendrix, who's been placed in stalls 20 and 21 respectively.

All of the last ten winners went off at a single-figure price and the case for NOBLE DYNASTY continuing that trend is strong. Charlie Appleby's charge returned to action with an excellent win at the July Festival, where he made all and kicked two lengths clear of the field, despite being lumbered with 10-1.

Noble Dynasty is six-pounds well-in at the weights and has been drawn extremely well down in stall three. William Buick's mount is hard to oppose.
Ryan Moore's recent record in the Golden Mile is fantastic. From his last six rides, Moore has ridden the winner twice, the runner-up twice and twice finished fourth.

On Friday, Moore will get the leg-up on THE TURPINATOR, who was last seen winning a very competitive seven-furlongs handicap here at Goodwood in June. Tom Ward's five-year-old is a proven winner over a mile and he's just about managed to land himself a favourable draw in stall 11. He could go well at a decent each-way price.

Race 5 - Glorious Stakes Tips

REBEL'S ROMANCE ran out an impressive winner of a trappy renewal of the Fred Archer Stakes on his return to British shores at the July Festival.

Charlie Appleby's four-year-old saw out 12 furlongs really well that day, and was pulling further clear of Kemani as he hit the line a four-length victor. William Buick's mount is lightly raced and remains open to improvement over this middle distance. If Rebel's Romance handles the course, he could be very hard to beat.

Race 6 - Nursery Handicap Tips

This looks extremely tricky, but I do fancy a small each-way bet on the Johnston's second-string, EXPLICIT. Silvestre De Sousa's mount won a six-furlong Selling Stakes by five lengths at York earlier in the season and ran well to place second behind Star Of Lady M last time out a Musselburgh. He's certainly overpriced at 20/1.
