We take a look through the televised races from Newmarket and York and provide readers with our ITv Racing Tips on Thursday.

The opening day of Newmarket's July Festival features four pattern races, with the Princess Of Wales's Stakes closing the curtain on Thursday's televised action. There are also three strong races to take in from York, which stages another edition of the Dante Stakes.

I've taken a look at each of Thursday's ITV races and picked out my best bets.

Race 1 – Sir Henry Cecil Stakes Tips

Al Suhail sits some way clear of his rivals in terms of ratings, and hasn’t dropped down to this sort of level since his maiden victory last year. The fact that the betting has Charlie Appleby’s charge third behind two maiden winners, however, has to be taken into account, and I fancy LORD CAMPARI could be a horse to follow.

Roger Varian’s looked very green an immature when finishing third behind Palace Pier in a red-hot juvenile maiden in 2019. Lord Campari then clashed with another John Gosden colt in Tsar on his first three-year-old start, and Andrea Atzeni’s mount brushed his opponent aside with an excellent pillar-to-post triumph.

The form of that novice race looks very good, and Lord Campari’s front-running style could be a big plus on the July Course.

I backed SANDS OF TIME to run well in the Queen Mary Stakes at Ascot. Mark Johnston’s filly was backed in from 16s to 10/1 on the day, but wasn’t able to produce her best, as William Buick’s saddle slipped at the half-way stage, and the duo beat a hasty retreat after that.

Considering she had such a valid excuse for that defeat, I think Sands Of Time has been overlooked at her current price for this Listed race. Judging by her debut victory at Lingfield, Johnston’s filly has more than enough talent to be competing in pattern races this season.

Race 3 – Bahrain Trophy Tips

Aidan O’Brien thought enough of DAWN RISING to throw him straight into Group Three company on his first two-year-old start. This son of Galileo finished fifth of five that day, and could only manage fourth on his reappearance, but both were hugely respectable performance for a horse with such little experience.

Dawn Rising then made all to break his maiden tag in emphatic fashion at the end of last month, beating a very modest field without coming out of second gear. Last week’s Derby Festival only served to prove that O’Brien is the master when it comes to three-year-olds, and I think Dawn Rising will take all the beating under Ryan Moore.

Race 4 – Musidora Stakes Tips

Pocket Square’s Group Three victory out in France was franked by Run Wild’s win during the Guineas Festival. She’s the proven class in the race, but I feel Roger Charlton’s filly could be vulnerable first time out over this extended, mile-and-a-quarter trips.

The one to take her on with is fellow Prince Khalid Abdullah flagbearer, RICETTA. John Gosden’s filly may not have won by far on both her appearances so far, but Frankie Dettori’s mount was very good value for her wins on both occasions, and this step up in trip should suit her perfectly.

Race 5 – July Stakes Tips

Tactical ran out an impressive winner of the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot, and the Queen’s runner is respected going up in trip. Any horse of Aidan O’Brien’s who wins first time out must have plenty of ability, so Swiss Ace has to be viewed as a serious challenger.

I, however, would rather go in again on QAADER, who I backed heavily in the Coventry Stakes. Jim Crowley’s mount had Nando Parrado well within his sights, but when Qaader was asked for an effort, he began weaving from side to side under pressure. Crowley tried his hardest to keep his exuberant young mount on the straight and narrow, but Qaader eventually went down by half a length.

Mark Johnston has had a few weeks to try and iron out those juvenile errors, and you get the feeling that Qaader is only going to improve with each of his runs at two. For me, he’s the one to beat.

This looks far from a vintage renewal of the Dante, and I’m struggling to see past the hot-favourite, HIGHEST GROUND. Sir Michael Stoute’s charge maintained his unbeaten record with an excellent defeat of Waldkonig at Haydock, after which many people presume Highest Ground would go on to take a crack at the Epsom Derby.

Sir Michael, however, decided to take the patient approach, targeting an outing in the Dante instead. Highest Ground has already proven his stamina over this trip, and it’s clear there’s more to come from this talented son of Frankel.

Race 7 – bet365 Handicap Tips

You could make compelling cases for at least half the field for this 20-horse handicap, so coming down on the side of just one is very difficult. This won’t be a big betting race for me, as it looks far too tricky to try and predict, but I will have a small each-way punt on EXCEPTIONAL.

Having trounced a modest field at Pontefract on his reappearance, Richard Fahey stepped Exceptional up to seven furlongs on his last start. A slow start didn’t help the odds-on favourite that day, but Exceptional didn’t pick up that much late on and failed to see out the distance. Dropping back to sprinting distances seems a good idea and Exceptional looks to have found a nice stall next to the fast-starting Lexington Dash.

Race 8 - Princess Of Wales's Stakes Tips

Old Persian4:10pm Newmarket Princess Of Wales's Stakes (Group 3) 1m4fGET 9/2 HERE

Although John Gosden’s mare Enbihaar is greatly feared, she’s never faced a runner of OLD PERSIAN’S undoubted class. Charlie Appleby’s star won Group One races in Dubai and over in Canada during a successful 2019 campaign, and returns to England for his first start of the season.

Old Persian will have good memories of Newmarket, having won three times on the Rowley Mile and performed well on his career debut here at the July Festival. William Buick’s mount may have disappointed on his two most recent runs, but this will be his first outing in a Group Three since winning the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot, and he can get back to winning ways in Thursday’s final ITV race.
