Paul Nicholls has won this race with his last two Challow Hurdle winners, so it's no surprise to see his runner, Stay Away Fay topping the market. Nicky Henderson's runners always have to be respected at Newbury and this step up in trip is likely to suit Russian Ruler, who finished fifth in the Dovecote Hurdle at Kempton last February.

At the prices, I'll side with HEEZER GEEZER, who ran well to finish second on his hurdles debut at Aintree.

Having hit the front after the last, Dan Skelton's charge was outbattled by Mahon's Glory - who had run ten times over obstacles in Ireland before joining Dr Newland. The fourth-placed runner from that maiden has won convincingly since, so the form of that contest is looking extremely solid. It wouldn't be a shock if Heezer Geezer was involved in the finish.

Race 2 - Berkshire Novices' Chase Tips

The winner of the previous maiden last year was STAGE STAR, who then followed up with a superb victory in the Challow Hurdle here at Newbury just after Christmas.

Paul Nicholls' star made his chase debut at Warwick earlier this month and produced an impressive round of jumping. West Cork kept himself in touch and pulled onto the leader's tail approaching the final flight. Harry Cobden gave the leader a couple of taps and Stage Star quickly opened up a 13-length gap between himself and the runner-up.

Beauport won a Listed contest on his first chase start, so he's greatly respected, as is the talented Camprond. Yet, they might have to go some to catch the market leader, who looked a natural on his first start over the larger obstacles.

Race 3 - Handicap Chase Tips

Paint The Dream is an admirable horse and Fergal O'Brien's charge is more than capable of carrying 12-00 to victory. Yet, I fear Connor Brace's mount could have a tough time trying to give 17 pounds to BEAKSTOWN, who ran a cracker on his reappearance in the Old Roan Chase.

Dan Skelton's charge - who ended last season with a Listed triumph at Ayr - finished a strong fourth in that Grade Two at Aintree, crossing the line just four lengths behind Riders Onthe Storm and Hitman. The handicapper took a dim view on that performance, dropping Beakstown's rating by two pounds to 137 and I'd be disappointed if he didn't prevail off this lowly mark.

Race 5 - Handicap Hurdle Tips

Shearer and Paddleyourowncanoe meet again, after the latter brought down the former when both failed to finish at Cheltenham two weeks ago. Steal A March was last seen winning a decent handicap at Worcester over the summer and Nicky Henderson's charge could challenge again off a four-pound higher mark.

One who looks overpriced to me is ASK A HONEY BEE. I was pleased to see Fergal O'Brien switch his eight-year-old back to hurdles this season. Although Ask A Honey Bee did manage to win over fences last term, he never looked comfortable over the larger obstacles.

Liam Harrison gave this former front-runner a more patient ride at Aintree last month. Honour Grey proved too good on the day, but Ask A Honey Bee ran very well for most of that race, fading back to third in the final 100 yards as he ran out of steam. With that run under his belt and Harrison's claimer reducing his burden to 10-11, Ask A Honey Bee should be very competitive in this wide-open handicap hurdle.
