Sunday's ITV Racing Tips

Race 1 - King Charles II Stakes Tips

Ventura Rebel and Royal Commando come into this on the back of good placed efforts at Group One level. Neither mounted a seriously challenge in the Commonwealth Cup, though, and both have questions to answer stepping up to seven furlongs.

BOCCACCIO, on the other hand, does not. Charlie Appleby’s charge won both his starts over this trip at two, and again at handicap level on his reappearance. William Buick’s mount only narrowly saw off a rival rated 93 that day, but he was very keen in the early stages and didn’t seem to be enjoying the fast ground conditions. An improved performance is needed, and expected.

Race 2 - bet365 Handicap Tips

When DAZZLING DAN was last rated 99, he beat future July Cup winner Oxted in a lucrative Unibet Handicap at Newmarket. After fairly poor efforts at Newmarket and in the Wokingham at Ascot, Pam Sly’s charge has dropped back down to his last winning mark and Dazzling Dan is certainly capable of mounting a challenge.

Race 3 - Extra Places Every Day Handicap Tips

Front-runners can often be hard to peg back in sprint handicaps at York. There’s a big block of pace between stalls six and ten, with A Momentinmadness and Copper Knight likely to cut out the early running. Eric Alston’s front-running duo have been drawn there too, and while Acclaim The Nation holds each-way appeal, JABBAROCKIE is the one to side with.

Alston’s seven-year-old has taken his form to a new level this term. Jabbarockie won well on his first start of the season, before succumbing to the very well-handicapped Lahore at Doncaster. Ben Curtis’ mount may be up to a career-high mark, but RPRs of 103 and 104 suggest he’s more than capable of winning this off 99.

All of the last eight winners of the Super Sprint were drawn in stall 13 or wider, so fancied horses like Lullaby Moon and Talbot have been severely inconvenienced by the draw. Although Get It ran a cracker in a red-hot Windsor Castle Stakes last time out, maidens have a poor record in this hugely competitive handicap and I’d rather side with a runner who’s got at least one win under their belt.

Two trainers have specifically targeted this race in recent years, Richard Fahey and Richard Hannon. Hannon’s big hope this year is HAPPY ROMANCE, and it’s very hard to knock her credentials.

Having finished sixth on debut, Happy Romance bolted up in a three-horse race at Sandown. Sean Levey’s mount then ran a cracker at Royal Ascot, placing fifth behind the ultra-impressive Campanelle in the Queen Mary Stakes. Plenty of fillies have won this race in recent years, and Happy Romance has a fantastic chance of landing the top prize after being drawn in stall 16.

Jojo Rabbit E/W2:50pm Newbury Weatherbys Super Sprint Stakes 5fGET 12/1 HERE

I’m also going to take an each-way punt on JOJO RABBIT who, like Happy Romance, was beaten at a higher level than this at Ascot. Archie Watson’s colt went into the Norfolk Stakes on the back of an emphatic win at Wolverhampton. Jojo Rabbit was a little outclassed that day, but ran much better at Sandown last time out, crossing the line just over two lengths behind Gussy Mac in the Dragon Stakes.

Hollie Doyle will have been delighted when Jojo Rabbit was drawn down in stall 22, and at 12/1, he looks an excellent each-way bet.

Race 5 - Summer Fillies' Stakes Tips

With 19 fillies entered, almost as many as the Super Sprint, this Group Three is looking like an absolute minefield. I won’t be having a big bet at all, but I will have a small saver on SHADES OF BLUE, who drops down in class having finished sixth in the Kings Stand Stakes last time out.

Clive Cox’s filly lost out by just a neck as a three-year-old in this race 12 months ago. I’m sure six furlongs is her best trip, and there’s a chance Shades Of Blue could go one better than last year.

Race 6 - Steventon Stakes Tips

Another hugely competitive race, with the top seven in the market separated by just six points. I’m again inclined to take an each-way punt on a runner I feel has been overlooked, and the one who stands out is FAYLAQ.

William Haggas’ charge quickly progressed from 79 right up to 107 last season. Faylaq has been beaten in two good-quality 12-furlong races the last twice. On both occasions, Jim Crowley’s mount travelled powerfully into the race and was one of the last off the bridle, only to find little in the closing stages.

Dropping back in trip is an excellent decision by Haggas, and Faylaq could still have more progression left in the tank.

Race 7 - Sapphire Stakes Tips

We head over to the Curragh for the first time now, where we find British raider A’Ali is the favourite for the Sapphire Stakes. My preference, however, is for MAKE A CHALLENGE, who’s won four of his six starts around this track, including a superb six-length rout in the £26k Joe McGrath Handicap over the minimum distance.

Having won comfortably on his reappearance, Denis Hogan’s charge was well beaten at Group Two level behind Speak In Colours. Make A Challenge bounced back from that defeat by claiming the third Listed triumph of his career in the Midsummer Sprint, and he looks a good bet to win his first Group-level prize here.

Race 8 - Marsh Cup Tips

Another massively competitive handicap, where any one of a handful of runners could win. I’m not massively taken with any of the runners, but feel that ROCHESTER HOUSE could prove himself to be well-handicapped.

After ending his three-year-old campaign in woeful form, Mark Johnston’s charge has looked rejuvenated in 2020. Rochester House came up less than a length short of Moon King on his reappearance, before making good late progress to place fifth in the Ascot Stakes during the Royal meeting. Joe Fanning won twice on Rochester House last year, and he could be the one to side with at an each-way price.

Race 9 - Kilboy Estate Stakes Tips

One Voice and Lovelier both come into this on the back of a win and cannot be discounted. I, however, am really keen on the chances of LEMISTA, who was also victorious when last seen at Gowran Park.

Ger Lyon’s filly kicked off her campaign with a solid victory over stablemate Even So at Naas, before comfortably beating her elders to win the Victor McCalmont Memorial Stakes. Lyons has decided this race was the more appropriate target than the Irish Oaks, so Ger must feel this nine-furlong trip will be right up her street. Lemista looks an excellent bet in the final race of the afternoon.
