Friday's card at Newbury features two Grade Two races. With just four set to line up in the Long Distance Hurdle, the John Francome Novices' Chase - won by legendary names like Denman, Bobsworth and Coneygree in recent years - is promoted to headline status.

2024 John Francome Novices' Chase Runners

Last year, Hermes Allen became the first chasing debutante to win this Grade Two since Coneygree's victory in 2014. Captain Teague will be having his first race over fences on Friday, having been awarded a walkover on his inteded comeback at Exeter last month.

Albert Bartlett runner-up, The Jukebox Man will also be having his first start over the larger obstacles at Newbury. Alan King's Masaccio, on the other hand, has already proven himself to be a solid jumper, following a reappearance victory over this course-and-distance.

Johnnywho got the better of Buguise Seagull when the two made their chasing debuts at Carlisle and both step up to Grade Two company this afternoon. Dan Skelton's Boombawn will carry a five-pound penalty for his victory in the Rising Stars at Wincanton and it's he who rounds off the betting.

2024 John Francome Novices' Chase Tips

There was only a length-and-a-quarter between Captain Teague and The Jukebox Man when they met in the Challow Hurdle here at Newbury. Both Paul Nicholls and Ben Pauling are excellent at teaching their novices to jump and both will be suited by the track. However, I'd much rather side with a runner who we've already seen over fences this season, as they will have fitness and experience on their side.

JOHNNYWHO (4/1) wasn't beaten far in the Challow Hurdle either. Jonjo and AJ O'Neill's seven-year-old went into that Grade One on the back of a return win at Carlisle, and kept on well to his credit to finish two lengths adrift of Captain Teague in fourth, with Masaccio a further seven lengths back.

Again, Johnnywho heads to Newbury having made a winning reappearance at Carlisle. Well-backed favourite, Cherie D'Am kept up a swift gallop, which set the race up perfectly for Johnnywho, who saw off the favourite and Bugise Seagull without ever being asked a serious question.

With the first two in the market likely to lead, this race should be run to suit a strong closer like Johnnywho, who already looks like he'll be much more proficient over his fences than he was over hurdles.
