2021 King George Stakes Runners
Charlie Hills' star sprinter has made the King George his own in recent season, blitzing his rivals the last four years. Battaash has won three times on good-to-firm and once when the ground was soft, so he will run his race no matter what the going is on Friday and it'll be up to the others to stop him.
This, however, will be no walk in the park for "the Bat Mobile". A Group One winner and four runners who've placed at the highest level are stacked up behind him in the betting.
Dragon Symbol drops back to five furlongs, having finished second in the Commonwealth Cup and the July Cup in recent starts. Art Power will also revert back to the minimum distance, having finished fourth or better on his last four starts in six-furlong Group Ones.
Kevin Ryan's dual-Group One winner, Glass Slippers followed Battaash home in this race 12 months ago and she has to be respected on her reappearance. King's Stand Stakes runner-up, Arecibo was touched off by a progressive sprinter in Came From The Dark at Sandown last time out, and remains in the form of his career.
French raider Suesa struggled a little in the Commonwealth Cup, but she's shown plenty of speed and talent at home in France this year. Liberty Beach won the Molecomb Stakes here in 2019 and ran well for sixth in the King's Stand Stakes, one place behind Keep Busy, who also runs in this Group One.
Ornate has finished third in the last two editions of the King George, so he cannot be discounted. Good Effort and Ubettabelieveit also feature in the Glorious Goodwood betting, with Stone Of Destiny and Zargun rounding off the field.
2021 King George Cup Tips
Considering the depth in this year's race and Battaash's limp finish when fourth at Royal Ascot, I'm inclined to take the favourite on at 6/4.
I'm going to back two against the favourite, the first being DRAGON SYMBOL, a sprinter on a clear upward trajectory. Archie Watson's colt was unlucky not to win the Commonwealth Cup, and ran a cracking race in with his elders for the first time in the July Cup, finding only Starman too good.
Oisin Murphy's mount showed plenty of five-furlong speed when thrashing Significantly - who's since won at Royal Ascot and a Listed race - by three lengths up at Hamilton in May. Although his last three runs have come over six furlongs, I think five will turn out to be his best trip and Dragon Symbol is a horse I'm keen to keep on-side.
In the King's Stand Stakes, I tipped Oxted to win and ARECIBO to run well at a massive price. They ended up finishing first and second, with Arecibo making excellent late progress to finish ahead of Battaash, Keep Busy and Liberty Beach.
Despite that effort, Arecibo went into the Coral Charge as an 8/1 shot. Jame Spencer looked to have timed his late challenge perfectly, but just when it seemed they had that Group Three sewn up, Came From The Dark swooped home to snatch victory.
Arecibo has taken his game to a whole new level since joining Robert Cowell, finally starting to fulfill the potential he showed at times with David O'Meara. He offers excellent each-way value at his current price of 12/1.
Verdict
This may seem like lunacy come 3:40pm on Friday, but I'm going to take Battaash on. Dragon Symbol and Arecibo will be my two against the field.
