We’ve taken a look through the betting for Saturday’s main event at Down Royal and before picking out our 2020 Ladbrokes Champion Chase tips.

Down Royal will stage the first Grade One of the new National Hunt season this Saturday, as a stellar cast of some of Ireland’s best chasers do battle in the Ladbrokes Champion Chase. It’s a shame that neither Cyrname nor Clan Des Obeaux – who finished second here 12 months ago - have been able to make the trip over to Ireland. Never-the-less, viewers can still look forward to an excellent renewal of this great race this weekend.

Delta Work tops the current betting for the 2020 Ladbrokes Champion Chase, despite only finishing a 16-length fourth behind Road To Respect in last year’s edition. Gordon Elliott’s star went on to win the Savills Chase and the Irish Gold Cup after running at Down Royal. Delta Work then produced one of his worst rounds of jumping ever in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, but still had enough about him to finish fifth.

Gordon Elliott accounts for five of the nine entries in this year’s race. One of which is Presenting Percy, who made the move from Pat Kelly’s yard during the summer. The former RSA winner has been beaten on all of his last five starts over fences, but was in the process of running a good race in the Cheltenham Gold Cup before that untimely fall at the second-last.

The Storyteller has shown a resurgence in form over both fences and hurdles in the last 18 months. Elliott’s charge won twice at Galway during the summer, and comfortably saw off Tout Est Permis when they met in the Irish Daily Star at Punchestown in September.

Tout Est Permis jumped well on his return to chasing that day, but it’s hard to see how he can make up those seven lengths on The Storyteller. Balko Des Flos was beaten some 35-lengths in the Irish Daily Star – his ninth defeat on the bounce, and the sixth time he’d been beaten by 25-lengths or more since winning the Ryanair back in 2018.

Henry De Bromhead will also throw Chris’s Dream into the mix on Saturday. Chris’s Dream won the Troytown Handicap in impressive fashion on his first start of last season, and dealt with heavy ground well to beat Shattered Love in the Red Mills’ Chase. A tendency to jump out to his right hampered his performance significantly on his Gold Cup debut, where Aidan Coleman’s mount finished an 18-length tenth behind Al Boum Photo.

Snow Falcon beat Shattered Love in a Grade Two here in the autumn of 2018, but has only managed one win in seven starts since, and that came in a weak race at Gowran Park.

Alpha Des Obeaux and Ravenhill round of the field, but both were beaten over 40-lengths in the Irish Daily Star, and I can’t see them making much of an impact now up in Grade One company.

Delta Work is comfortably the best horse in this field, and the only one who could claim to be a genuine Cheltenham Gold Cup contender. However, following a limp performance here 12 months ago, Gordon Elliott admitted his chaser usually needs his first run at the start of a new season. A quick look through his form card would back up those claims, so it’s worth taking Delta Work on as he makes his return to action on Saturday.

I don’t really trust Presenting Percy’s jumping and, although The Storyteller does bring some good form to the table, I think he may have found his level over fences. CHRIS’S DREAM, on the other hands, remains a chaser who could be open to improvement, and he’s the one I’ll be back.

Chris’s Dream has won half of his starts over fences. His best performances may have come around left-handed tracks, but he won the Red Mills at Gowran Park last season and, if he jumps out to his right again like he did last year, then starting out around a right-handed turner may be to his advantage.

Henry De Bromhead’s charge goes really well fresh, and every drop of rain that falls between now and Saturday’s big race – and the forecast says there will be plenty – will be to Chris’s Dream’s advantage.

Verdict

Unlike favourite Delta Work, Chris's Dream often does his best work on the back of a break and he remains open to improvement this season. This could be the ideal opportunity to claim a first Grade One victory.
