Lingfield hosts two important Epsom trials on Saturday afternoon. The second of those is the Lingfield Derby Trial, an 11-and-a-half Listed contest which has produced Epsom winners like Anthony Van Dyck and Adayar in recent seasons. Ambiente Friendly held off Illinois in last year's renewal, and went on to claim runner-up finishes in the Derby and St Leger respectively.

2025 Lingfield Derby Trial Runners

Unlike the Epsom Trials held at Chester, Aidan O'Brien hasn't conquered all in the Lingfield Derby Trial, saddling just three winners in the last ten years. That record looks likely to change this year, though, as the master of Ballydoyle will saddle the top two in the market ahead of Saturday's renewal.

Ryan Moore has opted to ride Puppet Master, who finished fourth in the Royal Lodge Stakes as a juvenile and fourth in the Ballysax Stakes on his reappearance. Richard Kingscote has picked up the ride on Stay True, who ran out an impressive winner on his racecourse debut at Leopardstown last month.

Prince Of The Seas could only finish fifth on his reappearance in the Blue Ribband Trial at Epsom, but could improve for that outing. Roger Varian's Rahiebb made a winning debut at Newcastle in March, but has since finished second in two further novice races.

Sean Levey and Richard Hannon team up with Southwell maiden winner Nightime Dancer. Another all-weather winner, Rogue Impact runs for James Owen. Andrew Balding's Our 'enery - fourth behind Nightime Dancer at Southwell, completes the line-up.

2025 Lingfield Derby Trial Tips

I'm expecting the two Ballyboyle runners to dominate this trial - an obvious assessment, given their positions in the market. Ryan Moore's decision to ride Puppet Master has to be taken into account, but I really liked what I saw from STAY TRUE (3/1) at Leopardstown, and fancy he might progress beyond his stablemate.

Despite being out of a Listed-placed sprinter, Stay True looked all stamina on his racecourse debut. Ryan Moore's mount raced lazily early on, forcing his rider to get to work going into the bend. Once he found his stride, Stay True powered home down the centre of the track, beating the well-backed favourite Game Point by an easy two lengths.

Richard Kingscote rode the winner of this race back in 2018 and he'll get the leg-up on Aidan's second string on Saturday. If he's improved for that debut run, which O'Brien's youngsters tend to do, then Stay True could upset the market leader.
