Paisley Park's superb unbeaten run was ended at the Cheltenham Festival in March, where a limp showing was only good enough for seventh in the Stayers' Hurdle. Emma Lavelle and her team discovered a heart problem following that race, so it's great to see Paisley Park out so early this term.

It still, however, raises some questions about the favourite. Is Paisley Park still the force of old? Is he fully recovered? Lavelle's star had to work very hard to see off an aging Thistlecrack here 12 months ago, and has a much stronger field to contend with this time around.

Paisley Park could still be the dominant force in the stayers' division, but I can't bring myself to touch him at that price. I'd rather back Paisley Park to win the 2021 Stayers' Hurdle at 7/1 right now, than back him to win this race at 6/4.

2020 Long Distance Hurdle Runners

Sam Spinner returns to hurdling, having been pulled up early on his reappearance at Wetherby. Jedd O'Keeffe's star is respected, but he is prone to throw in a shocking round of jumping, and he would prefer to ground to be a little softer.

Vision Des Flos also drops back to hurdles, having really struggled over the larger obstacles in recent starts. He remains a classy sort, but Colin Tizzard's charge has only managed to win three of his 23 starts over obstacles, and they came in small field events.

Honest Vic impressed when winning the Pertemps Qualifier at Cheltenham in October, and has room to improve over three miles. This will be his first Graded start in open company, though, and Henry Daly's charge is in with some very classy operators.

Stayers' Hurdle winner, Lisnagar Oscar has to be respected, despite a 15-length defeat on his reappearance. Summerville Boy will be a big player too, based on his return win at Aintree. However, they, along with Paisley Park, will have to give three-pounds to two dangerous younger rivals, and if fancy one of the six-year-olds will come out on top.

I put both up as horses to follow with the Stayers' Hurdle in mind at the start of the season, and I'm finding it very hard to decide between the two.

Thyme Hill finished behind three strong opponents in the Albert Bartlett and remains open to plenty of improvement. As is MCFABULOUS, who may not have run over three miles before, but he's shown enough to suggest he can compete at the highest level over hurdles, and I'm going to side with Paul Nicholls runner.

The former Aintree bumper winner was surprisingly poor on his first couple of starts in hurdles over two-miles. As soon as he was stepped up in trip, McFabulous settled into his races much better. A maiden victory at Market Rasen was followed by a superb win in the Grade Three Handicap at Kempton, where Harry Cobden's mount beat some decent rivals by over six lengths.

McFabulous carried an odds-on price into the Persian War Novices' Hurdle on his reappearance, and certainly lived up to his star billing. Nicholls' six-year-old was still hard on the bridle jumping the last, and saunters clear in the closing stages.

Severano and Hurricane Harvey, who finished second and third to McFabulous at Kempton, have both come out and won over fences this season. War Lord, who we saw winning a big handicap at Haydock last Saturday, was beaten 15-lengths that day too.

The time of McFabulous' Persian War win was five seconds quicker than standard. Previous winners Secret Investor and Poetic Rhythm could only manage times 15 seconds slower than that mark, while the time set by Thyme Hill - who beat Fiddlerontheroof in the 2019 Persian War - was a full 23-second slower than what McFabulous managed last month.

Paul Nicholls' star clearly has a very high cruising speed, and the burst of finishing pace you need to be a stop staying hurdler. The trip remains an unknown, but I'm confident McFabulous will answer those question marks in stunning fashion on Friday.

Verdict

With question marks around Paisley Park, I'm inclined to side with McFabulous, who looked better than ever when winning a Grade Two at a canter on his reappearance and remains open to progression over three miles.
