Friday's card at Newbury is headlined by the Long Distance Hurdle. This Grade Two has been won by many of National Hunt racing's best staying hurdlers, including Baracouda, Inglis Drever and Big Buck's.

We've taken a look through the confirmed field for the 2022 Long Distance Hurdle and picked out our best betting tips.

2022 Long Distance Hurdle Entries

Proschema had topped the initial betting, after Harry Skelton's mount bolted up in the West Yorkshire Hurdle on his latest outing at Wetherby, beating Thomas Darby by ten lengths. Since the field was confirmed, fan favourite Champ has come in for support and Nicky Henderson's star now sits happily atop the market.

Paisley Park won the 2019 Long Distance Hurdle here at Newbury and Emma Lavelle's star showed plenty of zest last season, winning the Cleeve Hurdle before a third-place finish in the Stayers' Hurdle at Cheltenham.

Thomas Darby returns to defend his crown, having beaten Paisley Park at Newbury 12 months ago. Jeremy Scott runs Grade One-winning chaser Dashel Drasher. Tom Lacey's Tea Clipper is the sixth and final entrant.

2022 Long Distance Hurdle Tips

Money has arrived for Champ since he was confirmed on Wednesday, which isn't a surprise. Nicky Henderson's former Cheltenham Festival winner has always been a talking horse and did run out a clear-cut winner of the Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot on his first start of last season.

The best time to catch Jonjo O'Neill's mount may well be first time out, but I still find him a very dodgy proposition. The support for Champ has resulted in PROSCHEMA drifting out to a more appealing price and I'd rather take the older brigade on with the younger, improving hurdler.

Dan Skelton gave his seven-year-old plenty of time to recover following a heavy fall at Cheltenham last November. Proschema finished like he desperately needed the run on his reappearance in a 19-furlong handicap at Chepstow and I didn't really fancy Harry Skelton's mount going into the West Yorkshire Hurdle.

While Threeunderthrufive lobbed along at the front, Proschema was given a quiet ride out the back of the pack. As the field bunched up turning for home, eyes were drawn to Skelton's seven-year-old, who moved stealthily into contention and booted ten lengths clear of Thomas Darby after the last to seal a mightily impressive victory.

That represented a new career-best performance for Proschema. Skelton's star travelled all over quality rivals like Thomas Darby and Sporting John, and he was still full of running when he hit the line. An RPR of 155 doesn't fully do the performance justice.

Proschema seems like a staying hurdler who could reach a mark of around 160 before the season is out. At 5/2, he's the most solid betting proposition.
