Two Group Two races headline the first day of action during the St Leger Festival. The first of those is the May Hill Stakes, a one-mile contest for two-year-old fillies that has produced winners of the Fillies' Mile and the 1000 Guineas since its inception in 1976.

2024 May Hill Stakes Runners

Charlie Appleby is yet to win the May Hill Stakes, but he'll be hoping that will change on Thursday when Desert Flower bids to complete a hat-trick. Appleby's filly has won twice on the July course this summer and will likely carry a short price into Thursday's feature.

Aidan O'Brien will be represented by January, a four-length winner of the Churchill Stakes at Tipperary on her most recent start. O'Brien has also confirmed another recent Tipperary winner, Ecstatic in this contest.

Ollie Sangster and Oisin Murphy team up with Sandown maiden winner Flight. Prestige Stakes winner, Ashonda will represent the father and son combo of David and Billy Loughnane. Gemma Tutty will run Elsie's Ruan, who placed third behind another Ballydoyle filly, Lake Victoria on her pattern-race debut at Newmarket.

Unbeaten fillies Miss Tonnerre and Serving With Style run for Ed Walker and Karl Burke respectively. Tom Clover's Biniorella Bay and Manila Thriller for Jack Channon complete the field.

2024 May Hill Stakes Tips

Desert Flower was impressive during both of her victories at Newmarket, but I'm still inclined to take the market leader on at her current price. Flight looked progressive when making all to win at Sandown two weeks ago, and the once-raced Miss Tonnerre looks like she'll relish this step up in trip.

Out of the two Ballydoyle runners, Ryan Moore has opted to ride ECSTATIC (6/1). Aidan O'Brien's filly made her debut over a mile at Leopardstown, where she found herself boxed-in on the rail at two crucial stages, before opening her account with a fine maiden win at Tipperary, on the same day that stablemate January won the Churchill Stakes.

Ryan rode both January and Ecstatic that day, so the fact that he's chosen to ride the latter is a pointer in itself. Ecstatic is out of a leading Japanese sire in Lord Kanaloa and the dam, Magic Wand finished fourth in the Epsom Oaks on her fourth career start, before going on to win pattern races at a mile and 10-furlongs later in her career. Ecstatic is bred to be smart and she's clearly moving in the right direction.
