Midlands Grand National Tips Odds and Trends

The Saturday after the Cheltenham Festival is traditionally headlined by the Midlands Grand National. Many of the sport's finest stayers have traveled to Uttoxeter and claimed victory in this grueling handicap, including The Thinker and Synchronised, who both went on to win the Gold Cup at Cheltenham.

Following a fantastic effort behind the exceptionally well-handicapped Kitty's Light, THE GALLOPING BEAR has to have a massive chance in Saturday's feature.

Ben Clarke's ten-year-old won the Surrey National last season, before going on to beat Bristol De Mai in the Grand National Trial at Haydock - a win which was subsequently stripped from him. This season was geared towards the Welsh Grand National, but The Galloping Bear fell at the fourth-last at Chepstow, when just starting to find full stride.

In the Eidar, The Galloping Bear carried 11-12 and was giving at least seven pounds to the majority of the field and was still only beaten two lengths. Ben Jones' mount only has 11-4 on his back this weekend and I'd be disappointed if The Galloping Bear didn't mount a challenge.

All of the last three winners of the Welsh Grand National will take part in Saturday's main event. 2021 winner, Iwilldoit will carry 12-00 this weekend, with this season's champion at Chepstow, The Two Amigos entering at the other end of the weights.

SECRET REPRIEVE looked like a chaser going places when he bolted up in the 2020 renewal of the Welsh National. Evan Williams' nine-year-old has struggled with injuries since then, but has shown signs in recent starts of a return to form.

Adam Wedge's mount kept on well to finish second to Farinet in the Trial for this year's Welsh National, before staying on from off the pace to place third behind Rapper at Cheltenham on New Years Day. Secret Reprieve was dropped another two pounds for that effort down to 132, two pounds lower than the mark he carried to victory in that Welsh National. He could go well at a nice price.
