Saturday's card at Haydock Park, if it goes ahead, will be headlined by the Peter Marsh Handicap Chase. This Grade Two may not be the Cheltenham Gold Cup trial that it once was, but viewers can look forward to another top-quality renewal this weekend.

Just six runners will contest Saturday's Peter Marsh Chase, if Haydock's card goes ahead. Form on heavy ground will be vitally important this weekend, as is the ability to see out at least three miles. Coopers Cross is yet to win over three miles or further and he's never even run on heavy ground before. His chances of seeing out the distance on Saturday look bleak.

Bristol De Mai always has to be considered on heavy ground at Haydock. Nigel Twiston-Davies' star will still have to give weight to several dangerous rivals, including Empire Steel, who I fancied strongly for this race 12 months ago but produced a limp performance on the day.

Venetia Williams boasts an excellent record in the Peter Marsh. Williams has saddled three winners and four placers from her last ten runners and comes into this year's race looking to retain the trophy for a third year in a row, having won the previous two seasons with Royale Pagaille.

FONTAINE COLLONGES (Tipped at 4/1) advertised her suitability for this sort of test by winning over course-and-distance on Betfair Chase day. The form of that race is looking strong too, with runner-up The Big Breakaway going on to place second again in the Welsh Grand National, before third-placed Rapper bolted up at Cheltenham on New Year's Day.

Williams' mare was last seen placing fourth at Kempton during their Christmas Festival. Fontaine Collonges was positioned handily that day, but made two crucial mistakes along the back straight and found herself outpaced rounding the bend. Once the track straightened up, however, Shane Quinlan's mount made steady headway, hitting the line strongly just nine lengths behind Remastered.

Fontaine Collonge will run off the same mark as she returns to Haydock and Venetia Williams' eight-year-old will shoulder just 10-4 - a dangerously low weight for a proven stayer who remains on an upward trajectory.
