The Big Trend

While next year’s 1000 Guineas favourite Inspiral is impossible to leave out of our perm, there’s a trend in the May Hill Stakes (Leg 4 - 14:40) that’s worth considering.

In the last decade, eight of the horses drawn in stall 1 have finished in the frame, and not just favourites, with four of them sent off at double-figure prices.

PROSPEROUS VILLAGE found herself back in a pocket when the race started to unfold in the Prestige Stakes, but finished off notably well to take third on the line. With a bit more luck in running, there’s no reason she can’t take one of the two available places through to Leg 5.

Placepot Banker

MODERN NEWS (Leg 6 - 15:45) was making his first appearance since last year’s Woodcote when scoring at the first time of asking in handicaps at Newmarket. Not only was that performance particularly impressive after more than a year off, with the front two pulling clear of the pack, but the form holds up well.

The second hasn’t run since, but the other six in behind have done, with two of them winning and four finishing in the frame in subsequent outings. Charlie Appleby’s charge has a 5lb rise to contend with here, but it’s hard to believe he won’t take a step forward from that reappearance.

Outsiders to Consider

She’s not one of the five last time out winners in the field, but FAVOURITE CHILD (Leg 2 - 13:40) has plenty of experience and has run well off the sort of mark she carries this time. Narrowly defeated by a tough sort at Leicester in a handicap two starts back, she ran as well as could be expected in a Chester Conditions event last time.

Quick ground looks to be key, with the daughter of Mattmu in the frame on three of her four outings on surfaces described as Good or quicker. Karl Burke is going well with his juveniles this year, and while she needs one or two to under-perform, she might just sneak a place at a big dividend.

Torpedo Leg

Free Wind (Leg 5 - 15:15) was a smooth enough winner of a Deauville Group 3 last time out, but the time wasn’t exactly great and there’s a danger she’ll carry more of the Placepot pool than she perhaps should. With that in mind, it could be worth taking a couple against her in case she flops in the Park Hill Stakes.

SAVE A FOREST seems to always be underestimated by the market, sent off 40/1 for the Oaks when staying on in fourth having finished second in the Lingfield Trial at a double-figure price. She then scored well, doing her best work late at Newmarket when sent off behind three handicap winners in the betting. A step up in trip looks likely to play to her strengths here.

TRIBAL CRAFT has the disadvantage of having to give the 3yos weight here, but she’s looked a much improved filly since stepping up to this 1m6f distance. She didn’t get the clearest of runs when mid-division in the Ebor, but chased home Wonderful Tonight in second in the Lillie Langtry Stakes in what is a career best. A repeat of that run puts her in the mix.
