The Big Trend
Messrs Dods and Midgley are worth keeping an eye on in the opening event of the Ebor Festival (13:50), with the pair responsible for nearly a third of those in the frame of the opening sprint handicap, despite saddling just 13% of the runners.
The duo have two each in this year’s event, and while Ostilio makes little appeal on current form for Paul Midgley, the other three get into our perm.
INDIAN SOUNDS, down the bottom of the weights, went close at Haydock last time out and is off the same mark here.
Michael Dods pair of PENDLETON AND JAWWAAL are solid enough picks. The former was a decent winner over the bare 5f here in July while the latter has run plenty of big races in large field sprint handicaps over the years.
Placepot Banker
The trends suggest you want a horse who’s not been predisposed to staying trips in their career Great Voltigeur (Leg 3 - 15:00), with the 19 of the last 20 winners all having run no further than 1m4½f previously. However, the potential improvement from KEMARI on just his fourth start is just too much to ignore for our Placepot perm.
He’s improved leaps and bounds with each of his three starts, from finishing second on debut, to bolting up by 6l at Yarmouth before taking the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot most recently. He hit the front a long way out in Berkshire, but kept up the gallop under William Buick to run out a ready winner of the Group 2. He’s not in the Leger, but victory in this event will surely see a Group 1 on his radar soon enough.
Outsider to Consider
Many will be deciding between Love and Mishriff for their representative in the Judmonte International, but at a price, ALENQUER shouldn’t be discounted.
Victorious over the subsequent Derby winner Adayar at Sandown first time out this season, he showed that was no fluke when taking the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot next time out.
Third in the Grand Prix de Paris where he was given an awful lot to do warrants marking up, and he’s by no means out of this getting weight from his big rivals. With three-year-olds beating their elders four times in Group 1s this year the Classic generation do hold the advantage.
Torpedo Leg
Fifteen runners and just three places up for grabs will send shivers down the spines of Placepot punters, with the possibility of a mass exit in the final leg of the day (16:45).
Keeping it simple and sticking towards the top end of the pool might be the most calculated play here.
TENAYA CANYON has won two of her three outings since being dropped back to 5f by trainer, Ed Walker. She beat the revitalised veteran Copper Knight at Doncaster last time in good style and might still have more to come from a 5lb higher mark.
EY UP IT’S MAGGIE was given a relatively easy time of things after veering right and bumping a rival a furlong out over course and distance in May, but still finished a good fourth. Having made amends for that in style at Carlisle next time, she ran two respectable races over 6f, her run petering out late on. A drop in trip could see her close again.
