Two excellent Group One races headline the action on the opening day of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe meeting. The most prestigious race on day one is the Prix du Cadran, a two-and-a-half mile contest that was first run at Longchamp back in 1837.

2024 Prix du Cadran Entries

Kyprios produced one of the most incredible performances ever produced by a stayer in the 2022 Prix du Cadran, which he won by 20 lengths from the front under Ryan Moore. Much like 2022, Kyprios travels to Longchamp having enjoyed an unbeaten campaign thus far and Aidan O'Brien's star understandably dominates this betting heat.

2021 and 2023 winner, Trueshan returns to France to defend his crown, having produced a seasons-best performance behind Sweet William on his most recent outing at Doncaster. French hopes lie at the feet of Christophe Ferland's Double Major, who will be looking to complete a hat-trick after back-to-back Group Two victories.

Coltrane will travel over for his first outing in the Cadran, having produced an encouraging performance at Doncaster last time out. Sir Mark Prescott's Miss Cynthia, who has won just one maiden in 16 career starts, rounds off the field.

2024 Prix du Cadran Tips

Kyprios' victory here at Longchamp two years ago remains one of the most astonishing performances I've seen from a racehorse. From his draw in stall one, Ryan Moore had to ride the favourite quite aggressively in the early stages to get a good position. Moore seemed happy to sit third for much of the contest, but Kyprios had other ideas, pulling his way into the lead before the final turn for home.

Having got a breather into his mount, Moore asked Kyprios to go and win the race and the favourite took off. Kyprios opened up a ten length lead, before hanging violently across the track towards the stand's rail. Despite those antics, Kyprios still claimed victory by over 20 lengths - a margin that would have been even wider had he stayed on a true path.

Timeform handed Kyprios a rating of 131 for that performance, the same that the great Sagaro received for his first Gold Cup win and far better than anything Yeats or Stradivarius ever achieved. Had he not been injured for the majority of 2023, we'd be talking about Kyprios as one of the sport's all-time great stayers heading into Saturday's main event and I would be amazed if Ryan Moore's mount didn't reclaim his crown.

That being said, Kyprios is hardly a betting proposition at 2/7. If I were forced into having a bet, then I'd side with TRUESHAN in the "betting without the favourite" special market.

Alan King's star hasn't been at his best this term, but returns to Longchamp on the back of an excellent run behind Sweet William in the Doncaster Cup. Trueshan won this race in 2021 and again last year, with Hollie Doyle's mount scoring by an impressive four-length margin.

Double Major likes to front-run, so there's a chance that he could get into a battle with Kyprios. I'll be hoping to see Doyle ride Trueshan a little more patiently, knowing she'll get a nice toe into the contest. If Double Major is softened up by the imperious Kyprios, then second place is Trueshan's for the taking.

I'm fully expecting Kyprios to claim his eighth Group One win in the 2024 Prix du Cadran, but if you can access a "betting without the favourite" market, Trueshan looks a good bet to finish second.
