Four tips for Sandown on Thursday 25th May

Two of flat racing's highest-rated horses will make their return to action in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes on Thursday evening. Along with that thrilling Group Three, Sandown's card features two further pattern races and the classy Whitsun Cup Handicap.

Here are our best betting tips at Sandown on Thursday.

Race 2 - National Stakes Tips

Nine of the ten runners come into this Listed race on the back of a victory, with Blue Storm and Irish raider, Son Of Corballis looking particularly impressive in doing so. The one I like most is ELITE STATUS, who will bid to follow in the footsteps of sire Havana Grey, who clocked a rapid time when winning this for Karl Burke in 2017.

Elite Status was heavily backed going into his maiden at Doncaster three weeks ago and rewarded his many backers with an effortless, three-length success. The going was soft that day, but Clifford Lee's mount didn't move like cut in the ground was imperative. He looks like a smart prospect.

Race 3 - Henry II Stakes Tips

Frankie Dettori has picked up the ride on Enemy, who's the classiest horse in this race, but also the hardest to catch on a going day. Enemy's regular rider, Richard Kingscote jumps into the saddle of ROBERTO ESCOBARR, who appeals most at the prices.

Back in 2021, William Haggas' six-year-old looked like a stayer going places, having won the Listed Grand Cup Stakes at York before placing sixth in the Ebor. Setbacks have meant that Roberto Escobarr has only been seen twice since October 2021, but Kingscote's mount has run well in both of those races and drying ground at Sandown will certainly suit.

We now reach the big clash of the evening, as Desert Crown and Hukum make their reappearances. While they are undoubtedly the best horses in the race, both have had their injury problems of late and their trainers will already be eyeing Group One targets at either Epsom or Royal Ascot. There's a chance that neither will be fully revved up.

CASH is a horse who's always shown plenty of promise. David Simcock's star was only narrowly beaten by future Irish Derby winner Westover in the Classic Trial over this course-and-distance last season and was touched off by Chindit - who went close in last Saturday's Lockinge - on his reappearance at Ascot. Jamie Spencer's mount is very lightly-raced and the fact that Cash returns after a mere 22-day break must tell you something about his well-being. 10/1 isn't a terrible each-way price.

Race 5 - Whitsun Cup Tips

The winners of this handicap are usually well-found in the betting and it's easy to make a strong case for Sir Michael Stoute's first-string, ASSESSMENT.

Second to 103-rated Manaafith on his sole juvenile start, Assessment won nicely at Yarmouth on his reappearance last season, before finishing third at Chelmsford the following month. On his reappearance at Kempton, Assessment was held up for the first time, before scything through the field last on to pick up an impressive victory. A six-pound rise doesn't seem harsh for that success and Ryan Moore's mount looks a good bet to follow up.
