We take a look through the field for Doncaster's feature on Saturday and provide readers with our 2020 Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes tips.

The final Group One race of the flat racing seasons takes place at Doncaster on Saturday, as a field of talented colts lock horns in the Vertem Futurity Trophy.

Horses who impress in Saturday's feature will likely go on to appear in the 2000 Guineas in 2021, so ITV Racing's main event on saturday will definitely be worth watching closely.

Wembley will bid to hand trainer Aidan O'Brien a tenth victory in the Vertem Futurity Trophy - a win which would see the master of Ballydoyle join Henry Cecil as the winning-most trainer in this event.

Wembley was last seen finishing second to stablemate St Mark's Basilica in the Dewhurst Stakes. That was his second narrow defeat in Group One company this autumn, having followed Thunder Moon home in the National Stakes. The fact that he'll be O'Brien's only representative on Saturday shows the stable must have complete confidence in Wembley.

One Ruler sits closest to Wembley at the head of the betting, as Charlie Appleby eyes a first Vertem Futurity win. William Buick's mount ran away with the Autumn Stakes on his last start, and fully warrants a crack in Group One company.

Joseph O'Brien will be hoping State Of Rest can build on his promising run in the Champagne Stakes, where he finished a length-third behind Chindit. John Gosden - who's never won the Vertem Futurity Trophy - could be represented by Kingman colt Megallan.

Both are very experienced and look to have quality, but they've managed to two wins in nine starts between them, and neither has run in a Group One race before.

Oisin Murphy will ride King Vega for Andrew Balding. It's been a while since a maiden has won this Group One, and his form was hardly boosted when Etonian - who comofrtably beat King Vega in the Solario Stakes - finished out the back in the Dewhurst.

Roger Varian has thrown Baradar into the mix, but he has plenty to prove at this level. Cobh ran well in defeat behind New Mandate in the Royal Lodge, but I think he may struggle to contend in what looks a deeper race.

Jim Bolger's Mac Swiney will also have a crack at this prestigious prize. Adrian Nicholls' Emperor Supreme rounds off this Group One field, despite the fact he's only rated 75, having finish third on both his starts to date.

Aidan O'Brien boasts an excellent record in this race, and he must be confident Wembley can go to the well again, having run valiantly in defeat in both the Dewhurst and the National Stakes. Ryan Moore's mount is clearly the one to beat based on that run at Newmarket, and stepping up to a mile will suit this son of Galileo.

That being said, ONE RULER is already proven over this trip and I was so impressed with his victory in the Autumn Stakes, that I'm going to side with Charlie Appleby's colt winning the final Group One of the season.

William Buick was forced to sit on the should of the pack having been drawn in stall one, and got very little cover throughout the race. Once One Ruler hit the front, he hung left towards the rail, showing signs of inexperience.  Buick managed to get his mount back on the straight and narrow, and this son of Dubawi showed more than enough pace to put the race to bed, and was even easing down in the closing stages of that two-length win.

One Ruler has already run at Doncaster this season, finishing third behind New Mandate in the Flying Scotsman. Again, One Ruler hung left into the rail that day, but was just starting to get going when he found his path to the line blocked and couldn't mount a serious challenge.

It's clear that this Dubawi colt - who's out of a three-time Group winner in Fintry - has plenty of ability. Some mentioned the 2021 Epsom Derby following his autumn stakes win, but One Ruler looked an out-and-out miler to me at Newmarket, and I fancy he'll be too tough for his rivals on Saturday.

Verdict

Wembley brings the best form to the table, but I thought One Ruler was very good value for his Autumn Stakes victory and he can take his game to a whole new level at Doncaster.
