The third and final day of the Dante Meeting is headlined by the Yorkshire Cup. Many of the sport's finest stayers have claimed victory in this Group Two and horses who impress will often go on to run in the Ascot Gold Cup during next month's Royal meeting.

2024 Yorkshire Cup Runners

Two Irish raiders head the market for Friday's feature at York. Tower Of London is the short-priced favourite, having scored twice in two lucrative staying races out in the Middle East this year. William Buick will ride Willie Mullins' Vauban, who'll be having his first start since flopping in the 2023 Melbourne Cup.

With Tom Marquand riding at Newbury on Friday, Danny Tudhope will partner Hamish, who is three from three on the Knavesmire. Giavellotto took down Eldar Eldarov and Broome to lift the Yorkshire Cup 12 months ago and Marco Botti's star returns to defend his crown.

Al Qareem renews rivalries with Hamish, having finished second to his rival in both the St Simon Stakes and the recent John Porter Stakes at Newbury. James Doyle partners former Queen's Vase winner Gregory for the Gosdens and Wathnan Racing. William Haggas' four-year-old Naqeeb rounds off the field.

2024 Yorkshire Cup Tips

It could be difficult to stop Tower Of London, as Aidan O'Brien's four-year-old looks to complete a hat-trick of wins this year. Ryan Moore waved his magic wand to help his mount weave through traffic and land the Red Sea Turf in Bahrain, and Tower Of London was much the best in the Dubai Gold Cup.

O'Brien's four-year-old does have a three-pound penalty to carry, thanks to that Group Two success out in Meydan. At the prices, I'd rather side with defending champion GIAVELLOTTO (7/1), who'll be ridden by the in-form Oisin Murphy.

With Murphy in the saddle, Giavellotto was only beaten a length by Tower Of London in the Red Sea Turf, when giving his rival six pounds at the weights. Botti's five-year-old was beaten a little further in the Dubai Gold Cup, but Giavellotto had a rough passage on the rail that day and, again, was giving a handful of pounds to the winner.

Botti's star ran out a worthy winner of this race 12 months ago and performed with credit when third in the Lonsdale Cup here during the Ebor Festival. I'm not suggesting that Giavellotto doesn't stay two miles, but all of his best form has come over this slightly shorter distance and the ground should be favourably good on the final day of the Dante Meeting.

Verdict

2024 Yorkshire Cup

Tower Of London is massively respected, but Giavellotto wasn't far behind him in either of those races in the Middle East earlier this year and the defending champion is better off at the weights this time around. With the trip and ground in his favour, Marco Botti's star has every chance of defending the Yorkshire Cup.
