Having entered the winners' enclosure as a winning owner for the first time earlier on the card, the King was on-hand to present the Ascot Gold Cup on Thursday afternoon.

Andrew Balding's Coltrane was sent off as the favourite, ahead of last year's St Leger winner Eldar Eldarov. Frankie Dettori's mount, Courage Mon Ami was nicely backed on the day, as was Charlie Johnston's Subjectivist, who had only been seen twice since his runaway victory in the Gold Cup in 2021.

Charlie Appleby's Yibir came in for support before the off, along with Aidan O'Brien's Broome and Willie Mullins' runner, Echoes In Rain. Ryan Moore's chosen mount, Emily Dickinson was surprisingly weak in the market on the day and, by the time the stalls burst open, O'Brien's filly had drifted out to 10/1.

As expected, Subjectivist went straight to the front. Lone Eagle traveled keenly on the rail, with Aidan O'Brien's duo sitting third and fourth. Eldar Eldarov had to be scrubbed along early, with Yibir happy to bide his time at the rear.

At the half-way stage, Joe Fanning poached a four-length lead on Subjectivist. However, on the approach to the final turn, the leader had been reeled in by the pack and Lone Eagle was the first to set out for home.

With Subjectivist plugging away on the rail, Coltrane suddenly moved into contention. Emily Dickinson stayed on down the centre, but the eyes were drawn to Frankie Dettori, who had been tracking Coltrane on Courage Mon Ami and angled his mount out to challenge at the two-furlong pole.

Despite his inexperience, Courage Mon Ami knuckled down for a fight with Coltrane and John and Thady Gosden's gelding moved into a narrow lead. Frankie gave it everything in the saddle, lifting his mount over the line to win his ninth Ascot Gold Cup.

Coltrane ran a valiant race back in second. As did Subjectivist, who held off Emily Dickinson on the run to the line to finish third. But the race, as most races at Ascot are, was all about Frankie Dettori, who received the famous trophy from King Charles III on his final ride in the Ascot Gold Cup.
