We take a look through the betting for this Group One on day three of Royal Ascot and provide readers with our tips for Thursday 18th June.

Thursday’s card is headlined by the most historic and prestigious race of Royal Ascot, the Ascot Gold Cup. First run in 1807, all of the finest stayers to ever grace the sport of flat racing have lifted the famous trophy. Sadly, the Queen will not present the trophy to winning connections in 2020, but she’ll be looking on from home as one runner bids to join the immortals.

That runner is Stradivarius, who will bid to join Sagaro and Yeats on the list of horses who’ve claimed a hat-trick of Ascot Gold Cup. John Gosden’s colt has been peerless in the last two runnings of this great race, striking late to claim a pair of comfortable victories.

Stradivarius’ incredible winning run came to an end here at Ascot in October, as the favourite was outstayed on soft ground by Kew Gardens. Following a fine third in the Coronation Cup on his reappearance, Stradivarius was made the odds-on favourite, and that was before Kew Gardens was pulled out. It would take a brave punter to bet against Stradivarius in this year's Ascot Gold Cup.

2020 Ascot Gold Cup Form Guide

Having finished a close second in both the Coronation Cup and Irish St Leger last season, Kew Gardens sprung a surprise to beat Stradivarius on Champions Day. Sadly, we won't get to see the rematch, as Aidan O'Brien confirmed earlier in the week that Kew Gardens was a little off at home on Monday and wouldn't be making the trip.

Technician took down Call The Wind to win the Prix Royal-Oak last autumn and has room for more progression over staying trips. It looks like the ground will be on the soft side of good, which will suit Technician perfectly. I just don't think he'll be good enough to beat the market leader.

Cross Counter was beaten fairly comfortably by the market leader at Goodwood and in this race 12 months ago. Charlie Appleby's has seen his former Melbourne Cup winner's form slide over the past year, and I'm struggling to see how Cross Counter will get involved here.

Nayef Road has the stamina and determination, but I don’t think he has the class of stablemate Dee Ex Bee, who couldn’t hold off Stradivarius last year.

Moonlight Spirit
was the beaten favourite as Technician won the Prix de Chaudenay last season, going down by less than a length. This will be his first start in Group One company, and the Godolphin flag-bearer will have to take his form to a new level to get involved here.

In short, I can’t find any reason why I should take STRADIVARIUS on. John Gosden’s star is unbeaten at Royal Ascot, the ground will come up in his favour and he enjoyed the perfect preparation for the Gold Cup with that fine staying-on third in the Coronation Cup.
