2020 Coronation Stakes Tips – 9/2 shot can bounce back to top form at Ascot

We take a look through the betting for this Group One on day five of Royal Ascot and provide readers with our Coronational Stakes Tips on Saturday 20th June.

Usually run on day four of the meeting, the Coronation Stakes have been pushed back to the final day of the 2020 Royal Meeting. This is to give three-year-old fillies who ran in the British and Irish 1000 Guineas a little extra time to recover, having run in those Classic races just two weeks previous.

Nine of the last 12 renewals of the Coronation Stakes have been won by runners who took part in either the British, Irish or French 1000 Guineas, so it’s no surprise to see entrants who ran in those races dominating the betting.

Quadrilateral carried the tag of favouritism into the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket. Sadly, for Roger Charlton, his filly could only finish third. With both British and Irish 1000 Guineas winner, Love and Peaceful not appearing, Quadrilateral is fancied by many to get back on the winners' trail at Ascot.

2020 Coronation Stakes Form Guide

Alpine Star was pencilled in to join stablemate, Albigna in the Irish 1000 Guineas, but Jessica Harrington decided to split her fillies at the last minute. Having finished third to Love on debut, Alpine Star secure to taking victories last season and could be a player here, but I’d rather side with a rival who’s already got a run under her belt here.

The fly in the ointment could be Graham Motion’s US raider, Sharing, who already has Oisin Murphy jocked up. Sharing ended her two-year-old season with a smart victory over Daahyeh in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, and kicked off 2020 with a weight-carrying victory in the Tepin Stakes.

Motion saddled 50/1 shot Miss Temple City before she finished a two-length fourth in the 2015 Coronation Stakes. Sharing has achieved much more than her former stablemate and is clearly a filly not to be underestimated.

Cloak Of Spirits held on gamely, after cutting out the running, to finish second ahead of Quadrilateral in the 1000 Guineas. Front-runners were aided by a strong tail-wind throughout the Guineas meeting though, and I fancy Roger Charlton’s charge will reverse the Guineas placings with cloak Of Spirits.

Run Wild too made the most of the conditions at Newmarket when making all to win the Pretty Polly Stakes. John Gosden’s charge saw out ten furlongs really well that day, so I’m slightly surprised to see her dropped back to a mile and I think she could be outclassed over this trip.

So Wonderful
remains a maiden, but a third-place finish behind Peaceful at the Curragh means she’s no placed in four pattern races. Love Locket could also run in this Group One, having scored on her return to action, but I doubt whether either will be good enough.

If Sharing was a little further adrift in the betting, then I think she would be a cracking each-way bet.
As it is, I remain a big fan of QUADRILATERAL and she’ll be my selection again.

Roger Charlton’s Fillies’ Mile winner broke really well in the Guineas. Instead of allowing his mount to stride on, Jason Watson took a pull, and that seemed to light Quadrilateral up a little. As the field came out of the dip, Quadrilateral seemed to be backpedalling, but the favourite responded well and was doing her best work as the runners hit the line.

If Watson can get his mount to settle better, which he should be able to do on a round track, then I think Quadrilateral could get back to winning ways and claim victory in the Coronation Stakes.

Verdict

The bookies are finding it hard to split the five fillies at the top-end of the market. At the prices, I think Quadrilateral is a good bet to bounce back after that third at Newmarket.
