2021 Diamond Jubilee Stakes Runners
Since the ground has turned from firm to heavy at Ascot, Dream Of Dreams has been cut into favouritism for the Diamond Jubilee. Sir Michael Stoute's seven-year-old broke his duck at Group One level in the Sprint Cup on soft ground back in September, and Ryan Moore's mount won well on his reappearance at Windsor.
Starman had sat atop the betting for this Group One for much of the build-up, having made a winning reappearance in the Duke Of York Stakes last month. Ed Walker's star has only lost once during his career, and that defeat came on heavy ground at Ascot here on Champions Day, so there is a chance Starman could be withdrawn from the race if conditions don't improve.
Nahaarr ran out an excellent winner of the Ayr Gold Cup last season, and pushed Starman all the way to the line at York. William Haggas' five-year-old has never run on anything worse than good-to-soft, though, and was taken out of a race at Newmarket last season when the ground began to ease.
Art Power has winning form on softer ground, having won a handicap here at Royal Ascot last season before scoring in a Group Three over in Ireland. Tim Easterby's sprinter finished fourth in the Sprint Cup and the Champion Sprint last season, and ran better than the result suggests on his reappearance at York.
Glen Shiel claimed a shock victory in the Champion Sprint last season, and ran well for a long way on his reappearance on heavy ground at the Curragh. Irish raider, Sonaiyla was beaten a neck by Glen Shiel at the Curragh last summer, and she returns to Ascot on the back of an impressive triumph in the Ballyogan Stakes.
Final Song impressed over six furlongs out in Meydan earlier this year, but has a poor effort at York to overcome. Royal Commando finished fourth as a 250/1 shot in last season's Commonwealth Cup, and ran well when beating Emaraaty Ana on his return to action at Doncaster. Soft ground, however, is a big worry for both.
Happy Power and Namos will be dropping down in trip, while Summerghand looks set for a second Group One outing at the age of seven. Ventura Rebel and Garrus will also take their chance.
2021 Diamond Jubilee Stakes Tips
With the ground as testing as it is, you can see why punters are backing Dream Of Dreams and Glen Shiel, who've both won Group One sprints on soft ground. The one I would rather back, however, is the talented ART POWER, who can make his breakthrough at the highest level on Saturday.
Tim Easterby's star thrust his name into the headlines at this meeting 12 months ago, bolting up in a good quality renewal of the Palace Of Holyrood Handicap. Art Power was then passed late on as he tried to make all in the Sprint Cup, and was only beaten a length behind Glen Shiel in the Champion Sprint.
Silvestre De Sousa's mount was very keen early during his return to action at York, and failed to lay a glove on the winners as they stretched clear down the centre of the track. Tim Easterby's horses often need their first run after a break, though, so I'm confident Art Power will have improved for that outing and he has plenty of solid soft-ground form to his name.
Verdict
Art Power is used to running on this kind of ground, and he's sure to have improved from his first outing at York. If he has improved between three and four, then he has more than enough quality to win this fairly modest renewal.
