Battaash (far) can only finish second as Blue Point wins the 2019 King's Stand Stakes.

We take a look through the betting for the 2020 King’s Stand Stakes and provide readers with our tips for day one of Royal Ascot on Tuesday 16th June.

The second of two Group One race on day one of Royal Ascot is the electrifying King’s Stand Stakes. Five furlongs of the famous turf at Ascot will be crossed at break-beck speed, if any of this year’s entrants want to emulate greats like Diadem, Abernant and Dayjur, who all claimed victory in the King’s Stand Stakes during their illustrious careers.

2020 King’s Stand Stakes Favourite

The flat racing world rejoiced when Charlie Hills announced Battaash would remain in training for 2020. Capable of the absolutely sublime on his day, jaws dropped to the floor as Battaash surged to victory in record-breaking fashion in the Nunthorpe last season. Hills’ star is also capable of vastly underperforming on his day too, as his latest run in the Nunthorpe illustrates.

In the previous two editions of the King’s Stand, Battaash has looked the most likely winner at the half-way stage, before eventually finishing second. There’s no Blue Point top repel him in 2020 though, and Battaash will undoubtedly go off as the favourite when day one of Royal Ascot rolls around.

2020 King’s Stand Stakes Form Guide

There really is very little quality in this year's King's Stand, aside from the worthy favourite. Glass Slippers is the only other entrant who brings Group One-winning form for the table, having come out on top in a bizarre renewal of the Abbaye when last seen, and Kevin Ryan’s filly has to prove that front-running victory was no fluke.

Equilateral has won two Listed races in the past year, but has come up woefully short when thrown into deeper waters. Liberty Beach tackles his elders, but would surely have had a much better chance in with his fellow three-year-olds in the Commonwealth Cup.

Well Done Fox and Shades Of Blue have plenty to prove after their defeats in the Palace House Stakes during the Guineas Meeting. Kurious hasn't been seen since winning a Group Three at his favourite track, Sandown back in July, and the likes of Rocket Action and Hit The Bid hold very little in the way of appeal.

2020 King’s Stand Stakes Tips

With no Blue Point in opposition, and no raiders from America making the trip to Ascot, the stage looks set for BATTAASH to finally land the Royal Ascot victory his career thoroughly deserves.

Battaash goes well fresh, having won on his first start during the past three seasons. Although he hasn’t been as explosive as we’ve seen him at other venues, the fact he’s finished second here twice suggests he does handle the track here at Ascot reasonably well.

This doesn’t look a strong renewal of the King’s Stand Stakes. There’s a serious lack of depth. If Battaash can produce a performance close to that incredible display in the Nunthorpe, then he should beat this lot by four or five lengths.

Although there seems to be little in the way of opposition to the favourite, this is the world of sprinting, where anything can happen. With that in mind, I’m going to take an outside punt on TIS MARVELLOUS at a crazy price.

Clive Cox’s charge loves it here at Ascot, having secured victories over course-and-distance in the past two seasons. Last July, Tis Marvellous carried 9-8 to an emphatic victory in handicap company, clocking a time of 58.92 – just 0.4 seconds slower than the time Blue Point stopped the clock in last year.

A reproduction of that run could see Tis Marvellous snatch a share of the places in what looks, behind Battaash at least, a wide-open contest.

Verdict

If Battaash can capture his best form, then he should be good enough to win this without breaking too much of a sweat. I'm glad I snapped up the even-money that I got when this tip was originally published, but 8/11 is still a decent price.

I’ll also have a small each-way saver on Tis Marvellous, at ridiculous odds of 28/1.
