The middle day of racing at Royal Ascot is headlined by one of the most prestigious races in all of flat racing, the Ascot Gold Cup. Around the Group One feature, viewers have got three further pattern races to enjoy and a trio of large-field handicaps to attack on Thursday afternoon.

Here are my best betting tips on day three of Royal Ascot...

Royal Ascot 2024 Day 3 Tips

2:30pm Ascot - Norfolk Stakes Tips

Of the juvenile races, the Norfolk Stakes generally attracts the smallest field, which sometimes makes each-way betting quite tricky. However, Whistlejacket is so short at the head of the betting, that plenty of dangerous contenders can be backed at healthy prices.

Shareholder is the 11/2 second-favourite, having made a winning debut at Beverley. MOVING FORCE (25/1) was only beaten a head in that contest, having looked equally raw. Yet, Richard Fahey's runner-up is readily available at 25/1.

Moving Force won nicely on his debut at Beverley, beating a couple of useful rivals. Oisin Orr's mount darted right when he came under pressure next time out, but battled Shareholder all the way to the line. I always prefer a high draw over a low one on the straight track at Ascot, so Orr's mount looks nicely placed in stall ten. The disparity between Shareholder and Moving Force in the market is far too big.

3:05pm Ascot - King George V Stakes Tips

The London Gold Cup form is always worth following and the first four from that lucrative handicap are entered on day three. PONIROS (8/1), one of three runners in here for Ralph Beckett, kept on to finish second behind impressive winner King's Gambit that day, despite drifting right out to 16/1 in the build-up.

David Egan's mount made smooth progress from the rear that day, passing Persica and Chantilly in the closing stages. Poniros' novice form looks solid and Golden Horn's progeny strike at 20% when upped to a mile-and-a-half, so I'm hoping to see Beckett's colt take a massive step forward over this new distance.

3:45pm Ascot - Ribblesdale Stakes Tips

This year's Ribblesdale looks extremely tricky. The Oaks form will be well advertised, with the first three in the betting coming into the contest on the back of strong showings at Listed level.

At a crazy price, I'm going to have a punt on HIGHER LEAVES (50/1). Henry De Bromhead's filly was beaten four lengths on both her juvenile starts, including a defeat to Oaks winner Ezeliya at Cork, before kicking off her three-year-old campaign with a narrow victory over an odds-on Ballydoyle favourite at Dundalk.

Shane Foley's mount was last seen finishing fifth of five in the Group Three Jannah Rose Stakes, where the slow overall pace of the race and the sprint to the finish didn't suit. Like Poniros, Higher Leaves is by Golden Horn and her half-sister won a Group Three during her career in the States. De Bromhead wouldn't bother sending Higher Leaves over to Ascot if he didn't think she could compete at Group Two level.

5:05pm Ascot - Britannia Stakes Tips

Only one of the last ten winners of the Britannia came out of a single-figure stall, with 80% of the top five placers in that time coming from stall ten or wider. Fancied runners Volterra and Air Commander both like to get on with things and Miletus will likely go forward in stall four, but I'd still prefer to side with runners down the centre or the high side of the track.

The first that I'm keen to back is SKUKUZA (14/1), who failed to win in three maiden starts over seven furlongs. Ed Dunlop's colt was held up for the first time on his handicap debut at Newmarket, where he plugged on gamely to finish a clear second behind Volterra.

Skukuza got off the mark on his most recent outing at Newmarket, where he still looked green as he made progress from the rear, but saw out the mile really strongly. Hold-up horses boast an excellent recent record in the Britannia and Skukuza should relish the quicker ground conditions.

At a much longer price, I'm going to chance my arm with the returning BOBSLEIGH (50/1). Eve Johnson Houghton's juvenile won his first two starts of last season on fast ground, including a victory in the Woodcote at Epsom, and earned a mark of 102 after finishing a close sixth in the Coventry Stakes. Although his form tailed off later in the season, Bobsleigh looked to be crying out for a step up in trip and the handicapper has given him a chance on his reappearance by dropping his mark down to 96.

5:40pm Ascot - Hampton Court Stakes Tips

As I mentioned earlier, the London Gold Cup always produces good horses. KING'S GAMBIT (5/2) was heavily backed in the build-up to that handicap and put a quality field to the sword with a decisive four-and-a-half lengths success.

Harry Charlton has enjoyed an excellent first season in sole charge of the license and he's managed to retain the services of William Buick. King's Gambit has some dangerous rivals to contend with in this Group Three, including the highly-rated French raider First Look, and Aidan O'Brien's Portland, who will likely be ridden confidently by Ryan Moore. Yet, King's Gambit was so impressive in landing the London Gold Cup, I'm expecting him to take this step up in class in his stride

6:15pm Ascot - Buckingham Palace Stakes Tips

I haven't got a strong opinion in this wide-open seven-furlong handicap. English Oak is the stand out, but at a fancier price, I'll have a stab at MAYWAKE (50/1).

Richard Fahey's six-year-old won twice last summer, clocking an excellent RPR of 101 when thrashing a decent field at Sandown. Maywake finished down the field in the Challenge Cup here in October and didn't feature on his reappearance at Doncaster earlier this month, but with that run under his belt, Oisin Orr's mount has more than enough back form to suggest that he's both well-treated and overpriced.
